Job summary

Howard County Government is seeking an outdoor, semi-skilled Utility Worker I to support water meter reading, maintenance, and delinquent account work across the Bureau of Utilities. The role rotates through meter reading, repairs, street and field operations, and customer service at the work site.

Responsibilities include setting up traffic control, training new staff, and responding to emergencies with on-call duties. Requires physical stamina and valid Maryland driver's license.

Qualifications

• Requires combination of education and experience to perform semiskilled manual work, including use of small hand and power tools.
• Valid Maryland Class "C" driver's license and driver’s license.
• MD DOT Flagger Certification within six months of employment.
• OSHA 10 Certification within six months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Reads residential water meters using electronic devices or manual methods and assists with large meters.
• Performs residential water meter repairs and pit grade adjustments.
• Turns water service on/off for delinquent accounts and may interact with the public at the work site.
