Job summary

Howard County Government is seeking a skilled Utility Worker II to perform meter reading, installation, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer systems. You will operate hand and power tools, work with a crew, and help ensure reliable utility services for residents.

Responsibilities include meter reads, troubleshooting, construction support, and emergency/on-call duties. CDL or related trainings may be required for some assignments; the role is essential personnel in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

• Two (2) years of experience in general laboring or public works maintenance and construction activities, including use of hand and power tools.
• Ability to operate and learn various heavy equipment and perform field tasks.
• Class A (or ability to obtain) CDL and related safety trainings may be required for certain assignments.

Responsibilities

• Read residential and commercial water meters; assist with large meters.
• Install, repair, and maintain water meters and related equipment.
• Mark utilities and locate mains; operate locating devices and inspect sewers.
• Work with construction crews on water/sewer installations and repairs.
• Drive and operate heavy equipment (dump truck, backhoe) and perform daily inspections.
• Perform administrative tasks, record keeping, and emergency/on-call duties.
