Job summary

Middlebury College in Vermont seeks a full-time, benefits-eligible maintenance technician to repair and service campus building systems. The role supports Central Heating Plant operations as a qualified Operator and requires ability to work varied shifts and overtime as needed.

This hourly position offers a hiring range of $28.98 - $34.05 per hour with opportunities to grow through technical certifications and on-site training. A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are expected.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; Technical certifications preferred in HVAC, Plumbing, or Electrical.
• Minimum five years experience in one or more of: millwright, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, steam boiler plant operations; basic machining.
• Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills; able to work independently across complex systems.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance and repair of campus equipment per daily work orders.
• Support teams of tradespeople in plumbing, HVAC, electrical, carpentry, automotive tech, and boiler plant.
• Troubleshoot electromechanical systems; perform preventative maintenance and testing of building systems.
• Backfill and operate biomass gasification plant for generation of 250 psi steam; operate boilers for 125 and 250 psi steam.
• Collect plant process data and maintain logs; understand basic process control systems.
• Perform tests on water/steam condensate and perform chemical treatments as needed.
• Follow lockout/tag-out and confined entry policies; adhere to safety rules and college policies.
• Assist with snow removal, event setup/cleanup, and grounds maintenance as required.

Job description

Performs various electromechanical, HVAC, and/or plumbing repairs to campus building systems. Supports Central Heating Plant operations as a qualified Operator.

This is a full time, benefits eligible, hourly position with a hiring range of $28.98 - $34.05 per hour.

Core Responsibilities:

• Perform maintenance and repair of various campus equipment as indicated on daily work orders; Support teams of trades people skilled in plumbing, HVAC, electrical, carpentry, automotive technology, and boiler plant.
• Troubleshoots electromechanical systems on campus; Performs preventative maintenance and testing of various building systems including steam distribution, heat exchangers, air handlers, pumps, and control systems.
• Ability to backfill and operate biomass gasification plant for generation of 250 psi steam; Operates boilers and auxiliary equipment for generation of 125 psi and 250 psi steam.
• Ability to collect plant process data and maintain logs throughout shift; must understand basic process control systems
• Performs standard tests on water and steam condensate and chemically treats as needed.
• Must understand spill prevention, control, and countermeasure process for heating plant; Must be familiar with Air Pollution Control Permit and ensure plant operation complies with all Air Pollution Permit requirements.
• Follows procedures and safety rules as required. Fully understands and implements lockout/tag-out and confined entry policies to comply with O.S.H.; Performs all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with established Middlebury College and departmental policies and procedures; Performs other duties as assigned to assist the department in obtaining and maintaining its mission.

High school diploma or equivalent; Technical certifications preferred in HVAC, Plumbing, or Electrical.

A minimum of five years experience in one or more of the following areas: millwright, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, steam boiler plant operations; basic machining; Must have, or ability to obtain, College Central Heating Plant Operator’s certification.

Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills a must; must be able to work independently with ability to troubleshoot complex problems spanning HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems in a large building environment.

Basic math and computer skills required.

Knowledge of college steam and electrical distribution systems preferred.

Must have a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and own vehicle for transportation of self, tools, and procuring small materials.

Furnishes own hand tools for plumbing/mechanical work.

Must successfully pass the Central Heating Plant Operating Training which includes sign off of the training manual.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Must have the ability to work Saturdays and Sundays as part of a regular or rotating work shift. Must be available to work flexible shifts and overtime as necessary. Must be available for emergency maintenance calls on evenings and weekends according to rotation schedule. Post-Offer, Pre-Employment Physical Screen required. Criminal Background Check.
