Job summary

Mt. Bachelor in Bend, Oregon, is seeking a Ski and Ride School Support Staff and Magic Carpet Operator. This outdoor winter role supports children's lessons, assists with class organization, student movement, meals, and equipment, and safely operates the magic carpet lift with daily inspections.

You will work with instructors and families to deliver safe, organized, and welcoming lesson experiences. A Food Handler’s Card is preferred; HS or equivalent is recommended.

Position Summary

The Ski and Ride School Support Staff and Magic Carpet Operator play a key role in the daily success of lesson operations. The primary function of this position is to support instructor classes, especially children’s programs, by assisting with class organization, student movement, indoor breaks, meals, equipment, facilities, and other operational needs. This role also safely operates the Ski and Ride School magic carpet surface lift, including daily inspections, required documentation, guest assistance, crowd control, ramp maintenance, and communication of operational concerns. Employees work closely with instructors, supervisors, support teams, children, and families to create safe, organized, efficient, and welcoming lesson experiences. This is an outdoor position in changing winter weather and may require prolonged standing, snow shoveling, and frequent movement between operational areas.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities
  • Support the daily operation of Ski and Ride School lessons, with particular focus on children’s classes and high-volume program periods.
  • Help supervise and escort children during indoor breaks, restroom trips, meals, equipment adjustments, and transitions between lesson areas, following all department child-safety procedures.
  • Communicate lesson needs, student concerns, operational changes, and safety issues promptly to instructors and supervisors.
  • Prepare, organize, clean, restock, and maintain Ski and Ride School lesson facilities, yurts, meeting areas, teaching equipment, and program supplies.
  • Operate the Ski and Ride School magic carpet surface lift in accordance with training, operating procedures, and all applicable safety requirements.
  • Complete required magic carpet inspections, operational documentation, and logbooks accurately and on time.
  • Maintain safe loading and unloading areas, including ramps, perimeter ropes, fencing, signs, maze areas, and snow surfaces throughout the shift and at closing.
  • Assist guests and students with loading and unloading the magic carpet, including providing appropriate assistance after a fall and managing safe traffic flow.
  • Monitor lift and lesson-area conditions, stop operation when necessary, and report mechanical, safety, or operational concerns immediately to a supervisor.
  • Shovel and move snow as needed to maintain safe access, lesson areas, and magic carpet operations.
  • Provide friendly, proactive guest service and contribute to equitable break and lunch coverage through strong teamwork.
Secondary Function

Tech and organize rental equipment for designated children’s programs, including Mountain Rippers, as assigned and trained. Fill and transport water and hot chocolate containers and support snack or meal service for full-day lessons. Assist with lunch service, table setup, cleanup, and supervision support for children’s programs. Ski or snowboard within ability level, when qualified and assigned, to support classes using chairlifts, surface lifts, or designated learning terrain. Teach or assist with a beginner lesson during peak holiday periods only when appropriately trained, qualified, and assigned by a supervisor. Perform other Ski and Ride School operational duties as assigned based on daily business and lesson needs.

Job Scope

This position works in a fast-paced, guest-facing environment where lesson and student needs can change quickly. Employees are expected to remain composed, energetic, attentive, and flexible during complicated or high-stress situations. They must use good judgment, follow established safety and child-supervision procedures, communicate proactively, and take initiative during slower periods by identifying and completing lesson-support or facility tasks. Daily assignments may shift between class support, facility support, guest assistance, and magic carpet operation based on operational priorities.

Children and adult lesson participants, parents and guardians, instructors, supervisors, sales staff, rental staff, lift operations and maintenance staff, lodge services, and other Mt. Bachelor departments.

Specific Job Skills
License/Certifications

Food Handler’s Card preferred. Required lift-operation and department safety training must be completed before working independently.

Technical

Ability to learn and consistently apply magic carpet operating procedures, lesson-support procedures, child-safety expectations, basic equipment handling, and radio communication standards. Child development, youth program, recreation, or education, or guest-service experience is a plus.

Interpersonal

Patient, attentive, approachable, and able to communicate clearly with children, parents, instructors, and coworkers. Able to redirect behavior respectfully, maintain appropriate boundaries, and contribute positively to a team environment.

Physical Capabilities

Able to remain standing for extended periods in winter weather, walk on steep or uneven snow surfaces, shovel significant amounts of snow, push or pull equipment and supplies, and move efficiently between indoor and outdoor lesson areas.

Education/Related Experience
Minimum Education

High School or equivalent preferred.

Minimum Time in Related Position(s)

Prior experience working with children, supporting group programs, operating equipment, or providing guest service is preferred. Candidates must be comfortable assisting children and adults in a busy mountain environment.
