Base pay range

Major Function

Plan, direct, and manage the overall safety program and requirements for the facilities department of a large university campus in Manhattan.

This individual will have direct responsibility for employee health, safety programs, and risk management applicable to employees and subcontractors. They will audit other departments for quality assurance and risk mitigation, report on the status and results of quality functions to the Facilities Director, and have the authority to stop unsafe work practices. Investigations of incidents will be conducted with root cause analysis and corrective actions to prevent recurrence. They will champion companywide initiatives relevant to their area of expertise in the region.

Job Responsibilities

• Maintain quality satisfaction through delegation, inspections, and oversight of mechanical, electrical, fire-protection, and construction quality, including repair and maintenance tasks.
• Develop and deliver employee training and awareness programs, ensuring monthly completion across all shifts.
• Develop, implement, and coordinate EHS programs as mandated by governing bodies and company policies.
• Conduct studies to identify causes and corrective measures for quality deviations.
• Ensure permits and reports are prepared and maintained according to legal and company requirements.
• Oversee vendor qualification and performance monitoring.
• Conduct training sessions to inform department personnel on procedures, equipment, and quality control techniques. Assess safety culture through weekly shadowing.

Requirements (Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, And Education And/or Experience)

• BA/BS in Safety, Engineering, Environmental Science, or related fields (preferred)
• Experience in maintenance or janitorial services with a focus on safe work practices
• Subject matter expertise in local, state, and federal EHS regulations
• 3-5+ years of occupational HSE experience, including management overseeing multiple sites
• Knowledge of risk recognition, assessment, and control techniques
• Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
• Ability to manage conflicting priorities and projects, including PPE stock management
• Experience in developing programs and policies related to pathogens (a plus)
• Analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills for issue identification and decision-making
• Occupational Health & Safety Certification (ASP, CSP, or CIH) preferred

Working Conditions And/or Physical Requirements

• Mainly Monday – Friday schedule with 24/7/365 emergency response
• Ability to climb ladders and access elevated areas; high daily walking throughout campus
• Ability to lift 50 pounds
