Job summary

Akima Global Logistics seeks a Safety Coordinator to ensure a safe, compliant work environment at a U.S. Army contractor site focused on equipment turn-in, retrograde, and disposal operations.

You will enforce OSHA, DoD, and Army safety standards, lead safety programs, and promote a culture of safety among site personnel and subcontractors. The role requires 3+ years of safety experience on government or military sites and a valid REAL ID.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; BA preferred in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or related field.
• 3+ years of safety experience on government, military, or industrial logistics sites.
• Working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910, EM 385-1-1, DA PAM 385-10, and Army site safety practices.
• Experience supporting military logistics, equipment turn-in, retrograde, or base closure operations is highly preferred.
• Excellent communication, documentation, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Must have a REAL ID, valid driver’s license with proof of insurance, CAC eligibility, and pass background/drug checks.

Responsibilities

• Site Safety Oversight: Implement and enforce the site-specific Safety Plan in accordance with OSHA, EM 385-1-1, and Army regulations.
• Training & Compliance: Conduct safety orientations and recurring training for all personnel, including subcontractors and temporary labor.
• Incident Management: Lead investigations of accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions; report findings to the Project Manager and COR.
• Safety Audits & Reporting: Perform routine safety audits and JHAs; track safety KPIs and report to leadership and government oversight.
• Risk Mitigation: Develop hazard control measures for heavy equipment, material handling, and military logistics operations.

The Safety Coordinatoris responsible forensuring a safe and compliant work environment at a U.S. Army contractor site focused onequipment turn-in, retrograde, and property disposal operations. This role ensures adherence to OSHA, DoD, and Army safety standards and actively promotes a culture of safety among all site personnel and subcontractors.

Supervises safety programs to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths, and financial losses. Develops accident-prevention and loss-control systems and programmes for incorporation into operational policies of organization. Supervises coordinates safety activities, through subordinate supervisory personnel, to ensure implementation of safety activities throughout program. Identifies and appraises conditions that could produce accidents and financial losses and evaluates potential extent of injuries resulting from accidents. Leads and directs the work of other employees. Typically has authority for personnel decisions related to hiring, performance, and disciplinary actions. Typically requires BA and 2-4 years.

Responsibilities

• Site Safety Oversight:
  • Implement and enforce the site-specific Safety Planin accordance with OSHA,EM 385-1-1, and Army regulations.
  • Conduct regular site inspections toidentifypotential hazards related to material handling, equipment movement, and personnel operations during equipment turn-in.
  • Ensure proper handling and storage of hazardous materials (HAZMAT) in compliance with EPA and Army guidelines.
• Training & Compliance:
  • Conduct safety orientations and recurring training for all personnel, including subcontractors and temporary labor.
  • Ensure employees are trained on proper PPE usage,forkliftand equipment operation, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and incident reporting procedures.
  • Maintain safety training records and certificationsin accordance withcontractual and regulatory requirements.
• Incident Management:
  • Lead investigations of accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
  • Report findings and corrective actions to the Project Manager and Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR), asrequired.
  • Maintain incident logs and OSHA reporting documentation.
• Safety Audits & Reporting:
  • Perform routine safety audits and job hazard analyses (JHAs) for all key operations, including equipment offload, inspection, and turn-in staging.
  • Track safety KPIs and prepare regular reports for internal leadership and government oversight.
  • Support government inspections and respond to safety-related inquiries or non-compliance findings.
• Risk Mitigation:
  • Develop and implement hazard control measures specific to heavy equipment, material handling, and militarylogisticsoperations.
  • Monitor environmental conditions and enforce heat stress,cold weather, or severe weather protocols as required by site conditions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate orBachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or related field preferred.
• 3+ years of safety experience on government, military, or industrial logistics sites.
• Working knowledge ofOSHA 29 CFR 1910,EM 385-1-1,DA PAM 385-10, and Army site safety practices.
• Experience supportingmilitarylogistics,equipment turn-in,retrograde, orbase closureoperations is highly preferred.

• Must have a valid driver’s license with proof of vehicle insurance.
• Must be able to obtain andmaintaina Common Access Card (CAC).
• Must receive a favorable background check and drug testing results.

• Proficiencyin Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
• Must be able to obtain Tier1/ NACI (Public trust) background eligibility.
• Employees maybe requiredto perform other duties as assigned.
• Must be able to travel within the United States asrequired. This position may require up to 25% travel.

Desired Qualifications

• Certifications:OSHA 30-Hour (General Industry or Construction)required; CSP, CHST, or similar preferred.
• Forklift and HAZMAT handling certification a plus.
• Familiarity with Army safety systems, procedures, and reporting (e.g., mishap reporting to the COR).
• Former military or DoD contractor experience strongly preferred.

Physical Demands & Working Environment

• Must be able tolift upto 50 lbs. and perform routine standing, walking, bending, and reaching tasks in warehouse and field environments.
• Must also meet all physical requirements necessary to perform assigned duties, including working in extreme heat or cold, high, or low humidity, blowing sand and dust, confined spaces, heights, and other inclement weather conditions.
• This position involves working both indoors and outdoors, periodic overtime, and exposure to heat, dust, cold, and adverse weather conditions.
