JOB SUMMARY: The Simulation Technician sets up, programs, operates, and maintains the simulation technology used for teaching and assessment activities. The incumbent runs manikin, task trainer, audiovisual, and screen-based simulation during scheduled sessions and resolves technical problems while activities are underway. The incumbent maintains equipment readiness, inventory accuracy, and preventive maintenance records for assigned spaces. The role follows the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) definition of the simulation operations specialist, an umbrella term covering simulation technician, simulation technology specialist, simulation specialist, simulation coordinator, and simulation AV specialist.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • A. Simulation Technology Operations Programs manikin scenarios, vital sign trends, and media cues in the simulator software before each scheduled session. Operates the simulator control interface during live sessions and adjusts physiologic parameters on faculty direction. Configures cameras, microphones, monitors, and cabling, and confirms signal and recording quality before learners arrive. Operates audiovisual capture, live observation, and debriefing playback for each recorded session. Troubleshoots hardware, software, and network faults during live sessions and restores function without ending the activity. Logs technical faults and resolutions in the department issue log on the day they occur. Escalates unresolved faults to manufacturers and service vendors and tracks tickets to closure. Performs and documents preventive maintenance on simulators, task trainers, and AV systems per manufacturer schedules. Sets up wired and wireless connectivity for simulation in labs, classrooms, and off-site locations. Manages session recordings, data files, and backups under the institutional records retention policy. Coordinates with Information Technology on device security, network access, and account provisioning for simulation systems
  • B. Healthcare Simulation Practices, Principles, and Procedures Sets up rooms, supplies, medical equipment, and moulage to the written scenario specification before each activity. Applies and removes moulage using approved products, and documents materials used. Cleans, disinfects, and reassembles simulators after each activity, and returns equipment to designated storage. Clears fluid lines and reservoirs and disposes of simulated fluids and moulage waste per safety procedures. Tracks inventory counts, expiration dates, and reorder points for simulation supplies and disposable medical devices. Maintains equipment records, warranties, and service agreements in the department asset system. Enters utilization, attendance, and session data into the simulation management system within two business days. Delivers equipment orientation to faculty, standardized patients, and learners before scheduled use. Pilot tests scenarios with faculty and reports timing, equipment, and programming problems before delivery. Recommends equipment and modality options that meet stated objectives within available resources. Documents set-up specifications and room diagrams so any staff member can reproduce the activity
  • D. Professional Role: Behavior, Capabilities, and Leadership Reports equipment status and readiness to faculty and the manager before each scheduled session. Protects participant confidentiality in recordings, performance data, and control and observation areas. Selects simulator skin tones, anatomy, and equipment options appropriate to the case and learner population. Completes assigned institutional compliance training and department safety training by the stated deadline. Participates in professional development through SSH resources, vendor training, or conference attendance
  • E. Concepts in Healthcare as Applied to Simulation Identifies the healthcare equipment, supplies, and medication packaging each scenario requires, and stages them correctly. Sets physiologic parameters that match the clinical presentation described in the scenario document. Uses Healthcare Simulation Dictionary terminology in written documentation and in communication with faculty and staff. Reads a written scenario and reproduces the required set-up without further instruction. Restores a failed manikin, network, or AV connection during a live session while the activity continues. Explains the differences among simulation modalities and recommends one that fits a stated objective. Writes fault reports that a vendor technician can act on without follow-up clarification. Applies moulage that matches the described injury and removes it without damaging equipment. States realistic turnaround times and negotiates competing set-up requests with faculty. Maintains confidentiality of recordings, performance data, and participant identity. Keeps composure and communicates clearly with faculty and learners during equipment failures.
