Job summary

UMass Boston is seeking a Simulation Operations Manager to lead CCER operations, directing simulation technologies, facilities, inventory, and staff to support undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs.

General Summary:

The Simulation Operations Manager provides leadership for the operational functions of the Center for Clinical Education and Research (CCER). Reporting to the Director, the incumbent is responsible for planning, directing, and evaluating simulation center operations in support of undergraduate, graduate, and continuing professional education programs.

The Simulation Operations Manager oversees simulation technologies, facilities, inventory systems, equipment maintenance, learning spaces, operational budgets, and staffing resources. The incumbent directly supervises two Simulation Operations Specialists and student employees, establishes operational priorities and workflows, develops and implements policies and procedures, and ensures simulation and laboratory activities are delivered efficiently, safely, and in alignment with academic and organizational goals.

The incumbent serves as a key member of the CCER and collaborates extensively with faculty, staff, students, Information Technology and Emerging Technologies, Facilities, Environmental Health and Safety, vendors, and external partners to support innovative simulation-based education and scholarship.

Examples of Duties:

Strategic Operations

• Lead operational planning initiatives to support growth and expansion of simulation-based education programs.
• Evaluate operational effectiveness and develop recommendations for continuous quality improvement.
• Develop, implement, and maintain CCER policies, procedures, and standard operating guidelines.
• Collaborate with the Director on long-range planning, budgeting, capital equipment acquisitions, and resource allocation.

Simulation Technology & Infrastructure

• Oversee simulation technology systems, audiovisual systems, learning management platforms, and simulation equipment.
• Coordinate preventative maintenance schedules and equipment lifecycle replacement planning.
• Serve as primary liaison with vendors regarding service contracts, repairs, software upgrades, and technology procurement.
• Ensure operational readiness of all simulation and laboratory environments.

Budget and Resource Management

• Monitor operational expenditures and provide recommendations regarding budget utilization.
• Develop purchasing plans for equipment, software, and consumable supplies.
• Manage inventory systems and ensure compliance with university purchasing policies.
• Identify opportunities for operational efficiencies and cost savings.

Personnel Leadership

• Directly supervise, mentor, and evaluate two Simulation Operations Specialists.
• Establish operational priorities and assign workloads among simulation operations staff.
• Conduct hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, and annual performance evaluations for professional and student staff.
• Develop staff and simulation faculty schedules and ensure appropriate staffing coverage for all CCER operations.
• Collaborate with Director to promote professional development and support departmental succession planning.

Quality

• Support accreditation and regulatory activities through data collection, reporting, and documentation management.
• Ensure compliance with institutional safety policies, industry standards, and simulation best practices.
• Maintain records related to equipment maintenance, inventory control, and operational performance metrics.
• Assist with preparation for regulatory, accreditation, and site review activities.

Data and Reporting

• Develop and maintain operational dashboards and reports on utilization, staffing, inventory, and simulation activities.
• Analyze operational data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
• Provide regular reports and recommendations to CCER leadership.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's degree in Nursing, Educational Leadership, Higher Education, Healthcare Administration, or related field.
• Three years of progressively responsible experience in simulation operations, laboratory operations, healthcare education, higher education administration, or related field.
• Experience managing complex operational workflows, schedules, or facilities.
• Experience with inventory management systems, databases, and educational technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in an academic healthcare simulation center.
• Credentials as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS)
• Experience supporting accreditation, regulatory reviews, or quality improvement initiatives.
• Experience with procurement processes.
• Knowledge of healthcare simulation standards and best practices.
