Job summary

City of Wilmington is seeking a Signs & Markings Technician II to operate maintenance equipment, install and maintain traffic signs and pavement markings, size signs, evaluate layouts, and determine when signs need replacement or cleaning. You will collect work orders, evaluate sites to identify needs, coordinate work, and oversee tasks from setup through completion.

You will also play a role in worksite setup, work zone safety, traffic control, and hazard awareness while overseeing and training

Qualifications

  • Diploma or GED with 3 years’ related experience in construction, traffic signs, pavement markings, or related field.
  • Must obtain NCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Flagger Certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Must obtain IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control certification within one year.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Job description

Use your technical skills and leadership to help keep Wilmington’s streets safe, organized, and moving. As a Signs & Markings Technician II, you’ll operate maintenance and specialized equipment, install and maintain traffic signs and pavement markings, size signs, evaluate sign layouts, and determine when signs need to be replaced or cleaned. You’ll collect and organize work orders, evaluate sites to identify needs, coordinate work, maintain accurate records, and oversee work from setup through completion.

You’ll also play an important role in worksite setup, work zone safety, traffic control, and hazard awareness while overseeing and training team members. From coordinating with other crews and divisions to assisting with day-to-day operations, you’ll use your technical skills, judgment, and leadership to keep City streets safe and moving.

  • Lays out job to be performed, organizes work orders, oversees sites, keeps accurate records, coordinates with other division supervisors, and calls in locations of signs to be installed.
  • Installs and maintains signs by documenting signs needing repair, complying with City standards for placement, installing specialty signs and posts, using specialized equipment, laying out signs using software.
  • Installs pavement markings by determining amount of materials needed, marking area from engineered plans or map, preparing thermoplastic machine, determining road hazards and conditions, and cleaning and maintaining thermoplastic machine.
  • Performs required clean-up and preventive maintenance on all equipment.
  • Performs operational support by establishing work zones, interacting with the public, and keeping records of inventory.
Education & Experience:

High School Diploma or GED and 3 years’ relevant experience in construction, traffic signs, pavement marking, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Requirements:

Must be able to obtain and maintain NCDOT-approved Work Zone Traffic Control Flagger Certification within 90 days of hire.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain International Municipal Signal Association’s (IMSA) Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control certification (or equivalent) within one year (or first availability thereafter).
  • Valid Driver’s License
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Exerts over 100 lbs. occasionally, 50-100 lbs. frequently, or up to 20-50 lbs. constantly.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position generally requires work to be performed both outdoors and in a shop setting.
