Job Summary

This position is responsible for designing and fabricating street and other signs.

Major Duties

• Design, layout, and fabricate traffic signs; cut and layout borders, numerals, letters, and symbols on prepared blanks.
• Use sign design software to create traffic signs.
• Maintain inventory of sign materials and perform preventative maintenance on sign-making equipment.
• Verify received materials and prepare purchase orders as needed.
• Install signs and signposts following MUTCD guidelines.
• Inspect signs for repair or replacement needs and perform repairs.
• Clear illegal signs from city rights-of-way and handle legal advertising signs for the Planning department.
• Conduct traffic studies using electronic counters.
• Perform sign repairs after hours as needed.
• Manage traffic control at hazard sites and special events.
• Assist with seasonal decorations and street painting projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be 18 or older with a High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience. Valid driver’s license required, with a Class B license or ability to obtain one. Typically, 1-2 years of related experience or completion of an apprenticeship/internship.

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of traffic sign design, construction, and installation procedures, including MUTCD standards.
• Proficiency with computers and relevant software.
• Understanding of city streets and geography.
• Skill in using hand and power tools, fabricating, and installing signs.
• Strong communication skills.

Work Scope and Environment

This role involves traffic sign fabrication, installation, and maintenance, often in challenging weather and traffic conditions. The work aims to ensure the safety and efficiency of city streets.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Work involves sitting, standing, bending, lifting, and using tools, often outdoors in varying weather conditions. Protective gear is required, and overtime or on-call hours may be necessary.
