City of Fort Wayne is seeking a skilled Sign Marking Specialist/Electrical Technician to support Traffic Operations. The role covers electrical work, sign fabrication, installation, pavement markings, and equipment maintenance in shop and field environments.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Assist with installing, repairing, and replacing internally illuminated signs, traffic signals, and street lighting.
• Fabricate, assemble, paint, install, repair, and maintain street signs, including overhead signs and banners.
• Apply and maintain pavement markings: crosswalks, lanes, arrows, stop bars, and curbs.
• Troubleshoot and repair electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic tools and equipment; weld, cut, and perform shop/field tasks as needed.
• Operate lift platforms, bucket trucks, forklifts, and other equipment while setting up work zones and directing traffic.

Sign Marking Specialist/Electrical Technician-Traffic Operations 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.; hours may vary

What You'll Do

The Sign Marking Specialist/Electrical Technician performs a combination of electrical, sign fabrication, installation, pavement marking, and equipment maintenance work. You will work in the shop and throughout the City installing and maintaining the signs, markings, lighting, and related equipment drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists rely on every day.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with installing, repairing, and replacing internally illuminated signs, traffic signals, and street lighting.
• Fabricate, assemble, paint, install, repair, and maintain street signs, including overhead signs, River greenway signs, and the downtown banner system.
• Apply and maintain pavement markings, including crosswalks, traffic lanes, arrows, stop bars, railroad crossings, curbs, and parking stalls.
• Troubleshoot and repair electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic tools and equipment; perform welding, cutting, and other skilled shop and field work.
• Operate lift platforms, bucket trucks, forklifts, front-end loaders, air hammers, grinders, and other specialized equipment while setting up work zones, directing traffic, completing documentation, and maintaining an organized work area.

What You Bring – Education & Experience

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation, supplemented by electrical coursework.
• Three years of experience in electrical wiring, maintenance, and sign‑related work.
• Ability to safely work around moving traffic, at elevated heights, and in changing outdoor weather conditions.
• Ability to bend, twist, climb, and regularly lift at least 50 pounds.

Required Licenses & Certifications

• Valid Indiana driver's license.
• Ability to obtain an Indiana Class B Commercial Driver's License within 12 months of employment. The employee must be at least 21 years old to hold a CDL with the City of Fort Wayne.
• Ability to obtain IMSA Work Zone and Signs and Markings Level II certifications within 12 months, at the discretion of management.

Technical Skills & Knowledge

• Working knowledge of electricity, electrical wiring, sign lighting, ballasts, and sign installation principles.
• Ability to identify and resolve electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment problems in the shop or field.
• Ability to understand technical instructions, measurements, diagrams, fractions, percentages, ratios, geometry, and basic trigonometry.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with coworkers, other City departments, outside agencies, and members of the public.
• Commitment to following established safety procedures, particularly when working around traffic, overhead installations, machinery, chemicals, and hazardous materials.
