Job summary

Capital-Area-Intermediate-Unit is seeking a paraprofessional to facilitate effective communication for students who use sign language and to provide instructional, language, and behavioral supports under a certified teacher's direction.

Responsibilities include assisting with signed communication, classroom management, and collaboration with staff while maintaining confidentiality and following CAIU policies.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or equivalent; some college preferred.
• Knowledgeable and skilled in the use of sign language.
• Must be certified as a Qualified Paraprofessional, as required under Chapter 14, OR willing to become one within timelines.
• Must be trained in CPR, First Aid and AED or able to obtain certification.
• Full certification in Safe Crisis Management or equivalent as required.
• Ability to lift/assist children with special needs up to 40 lbs.
• Able to follow written and oral instructions.
• Computer skills including Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

• Support instruction and expand signed communication.
• Work with the teacher as a team member in language and social development.
• Assist in maintaining a positive learning environment.
• Follow disciplinary policies and procedures as directed.
• Be a positive social and emotional role model for the student.
• Facilitate school activities in the student’s preferred signing mode.
• Support staff in developing signing abilities.
• Communicate progress and needs to the educational team.
• Share essential information clearly and concisely.
