Job summary

DeSoto County Schools seeks a full-time individual to interpret for deaf or hard-of-hearing students within the educational setting, ensuring clear communication between students and teachers.

The role requires collaboration with the hearing impaired staff, participation in IEP meetings, and adherence to ethics and confidentiality guidelines, with a focus on inclusive classroom participation.

Qualifications

• Must have High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
• Registered with MS Office on Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
• Mississippi Provisional Certification, Q & A certification, or RID certification.

Responsibilities

• Interpret for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in the educational setting, as outlined by the IEP.
• Communicate through sign-language or speech between student and teacher.
• Collaborate with teacher of the hearing impaired and with special education staff.
• Adapt classroom activities to promote participation of deaf or hard of hearing students.
• Model social interaction with hearing peers to encourage inclusion.
• Prepare for classroom academic content.
• Participate in IEP meetings when appropriate.
• Adhere to the Mississippi Code of Ethics.
• Maintain confidentiality and privacy of all Desoto County Schools' records.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Interpret for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in the educational setting, as outlined by the IEP;
• Communicate through sign-language or speech for the student to teacher and teacher to student;
• Collaborate with teacher of the hearing impaired;
• Collaborate with special education and general education staff regarding academic supports and to adapt classroom/school activities to promote participation of the deaf or hard of hearing student;
• Encourage interaction with hearing peers by modeling appropriate social strategies;
• Prepare for classroom academic content;
• Participate in IEP meetings when appropriate.
• Adhere to the Mississippi Code of Ethics
• Maintain confidentiality and privacy of all Desoto County Schools' records

Minimum Requirements:
