Position: Shuttle Bus Transportation Driver
Location: Sugar Grove Campus (Temporary)
Reporting to: Campus Services Manager
The Driver ensures the safety and welfare of passengers, maintains vehicle cleanliness, follows routes, observes regulations, and records transportation details.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the safety and welfare of passengers being transported to and from the college campuses.
- Complete a comprehensive written inspection of the vehicle daily and report issues to the supervisor or delegated staff.
- Verify proper working order of communication devices (e.g., two‑way radio, cellular phone) before each trip.
- Arrange and ensure routine maintenance on transportation vehicles, transporting vehicles to and from maintenance or repair facilities as needed.
- Maintain sufficient fuel levels at all times.
- Operate the vehicle in full compliance with all road and safety regulations; report any traffic violations to the supervisor immediately.
- Keep the vehicle clean, free of debris, and follow established cleaning procedures.
- Inventory emergency and first‑aid supplies and equipment; report needs to the supervisor or delegated staff.
- In case of accidents or emergencies, evacuate passengers according to written and practiced procedures.
- When an accident occurs, follow medical emergency procedures and complete a written accident report as required by college policy and authorities.
- Attend and participate in required college trainings and professional development opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License.
- Commercial Driver’s License (Class B or A) with Passenger (P) or School Bus endorsement preferred.
- Safe, defensive driving practices.
- Knowledge of Illinois Motor Vehicle Code applicable to the operation of public‑transportation vehicles.
- Basic maintenance of transit vehicles and related equipment.
- Operating a transit vehicle safely.
- Maintaining order among passengers on a bus.
- Good customer service skills.
- Understanding and implementing verbal and written instructions.
- Proper use of two‑way radio system.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co‑workers.
- Ability to sit or remain stationary for extended periods.
- Mobility and strength to occasionally assist passengers weighing up to 150 pounds.
- Ability to board, secure, and unload passengers using wheelchairs or mobility devices.
- Manual dexterity to operate the vehicle.
- Vision to read printed and handwritten materials.
- Hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and by telephone/radio.
- Willingness and ability to work in varying weather conditions and under vehicular traffic, noise, and fumes.
- Ability and willingness to work with individuals from diverse cultural, physical, behavioral, and environmental backgrounds.
