Job summary

Transdev North America is seeking a highly skilled Shop Supervisor to oversee diesel bus maintenance, PMs, and DOT readiness at our Phoenix facility. You will supervise mechanics and service staff, manage outside labor, schedule repairs, and ensure safety and regulatory compliance across daily operations.

The role requires leadership experience, strong technical knowledge of heavy-duty vehicles, and the ability to coordinate with HR, parts, and operations.

Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of progressive mechanical experience, including hands-on diesel mechanic work, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Associate degree in management, mechanical engineering, or related technical field preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • High School Diploma or GED; valid Arizona driver’s license and ability to obtain CDL Class B with Passenger Endorsement.
  • Forklift certification.
  • Ability to obtain ASE Master Transit Bus Certification.
  • Must be computer literate in word processing, spreadsheets and databases.
  • Knowledge of heavy-duty vehicle systems (transmission, engine, brakes, HVAC).
  • Strong organization, time management and written/verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Duties include PMs and preparing buses for DOT inspections.
  • Supervise mechanics and service staff; monitor outside labor; schedule repairs and maintenance.
  • Review abnormal issues and follow up; evaluate performance of new and current employees.
  • Facilitate training and participate in interview panels for maintenance positions.
  • Monitor sectional budget and coordinate outside contract labor for projects.
  • Lead daily safety/shift turnover meetings and communicate with operations on repairs.
  • Create and close work orders; assign work based on qualifications; provide on-the-spot decisions as needed.
  • Collaborate with Parts to obtain replacement parts and ensure timely repairs.
  • Schedule PMI’s and inform operations; oversee vendor and internal work quality.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Shop Supervisor to join our team. Duties include PMs and preparing buses for DOT inspections. Directly supervises the mechanics, service employees and other maintenance personnel, monitors outside contract laborers; schedules the repairs and maintenance of a wide variety of diesel-powered equipment; ensures an environment that meets safety and regulatory requirements and monitors all daily contractual maintenance obligations.

Essential Job Functions
  • Duties include PMs and preparing buses for DOT inspections.
  • Supervises mechanics, investigates, provides information, and makes / administers decisions concerning employee discipline.
  • Daily review of the subsequent follow-up on all abnormal issues.
  • Evaluates the performance of both new and current employees.
  • Facilitates and schedules training of both new and current employees.
  • Works with Human Resources by participating in interview panels for maintenance positions.
  • Monitors the budget at a sectional level.
  • Assisting with scheduling outside contract labor for special projects and monitoring the laborers' performance.
  • Conducts daily safety/shift turnover meetings with both mechanics and supervisors on duty.
  • Works with facility maintenance to communicate issues relevant to a safe and pleasant work environment.
  • Schedules major and minor repairs.
  • Creates work orders for repairs to coaches, reviews past work orders for repairs to coaches, and reviews and closes current work orders.
  • Assigns work to mechanics based on the work required and the mechanic's qualifications.
  • Makes on-the-spot decisions regarding repairs and, at times, makes on-the-spot repairs when necessary.
  • Communicates with mechanics on diagnosis and procedures for repair and assists with technical questions.
  • Monitors tracking sheets generated by management to ensure repairs are completed promptly.
  • Monitors the work of both internal employees and vendors for quality and quantity.
  • Works with Parts personnel to obtain the correct replacement parts.
  • Decide which coaches to pull/swap out and relay this information to operations at least 8 hours before.
  • Lists and schedules coaches for PMI’s and other work and communicates this information with operations.
  • Performs other tasks and projects as assigned
Qualifications
  • Requires five (5) years of progressive mechanical experience to include hands‑on diesel mechanic experience, of which a minimum of 2 years must be in a supervisory or lead role.
  • An associate degree in management, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field is preferred, but not required or an amount of experience equivalent to an associate degree.
  • High School Diploma or GED and valid Arizona driver’s license and the ability to obtain a CDL Class B with Passenger Endorsement required.
  • Must have forklift certification.
  • Ability to obtain ASE Master Transit Bus Certification
  • Must be computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.
  • Must be able to work amid constant interruptions, prioritize and deal with time pressures and be able to clearly communicate verbally and in written form.
  • Must have a current working knowledge of all mechanical systems related to heavy-duty transportation vehicles, including transmissions, engines, brakes, and climate control units.
  • Must have strong organization and have basic math skills for tracking trends and for report writing.
  • This ability to handle crisis/conflict is required.
  • Subject to a DOT drug testing and physical if applicable. DOT Regulation 49 CFR Part 40 does not authorize the use of Schedule I drugs, including cannabis, for any reason.
Physical Requirements
  • The essential functions of this position require the ability to:
  • Work outside in varying temperature, weather, and humidity conditions.
  • Work outside, work alone and in remote locations.
  • Sit/Stand for extended periods (up to 6–8 hours per day); frequently walk for long distances and on possible sloped ground or slippery and uneven surfaces
  • Push and pull objects up to 50 pounds, occasionally throughout the workday; lift material weighing up to 50 lbs. with or without assistance; occasionally bend, kneel, or crouch to files or equipment stored at ground level
  • Withstand heavy traffic areas while performing the duties of the job; tolerate exposure to considerable amounts of dust, vehicle fumes and noise
