Description
POSITION SUMMARY

The Shop Mechanic performs preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on City Public Works vehicles and equipment. The primary goal is to keep the fleet safe, reliable, and ready for service while reducing avoidable breakdowns and downtime. The position also assists with parts inventory, maintenance records, shop organization, and general shop upkeep.

EQUIPMENT SERVICED

Pickup and service trucks, dump trucks, tractors, skid steers, excavators, dozers, backhoes, loaders, trailers, mowers, generators, pumps, attachments, and other light- and heavy-duty Public Works equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, including oil and filter changes, lubrication, fluid service, and inspection of belts, hoses, batteries, tires, brakes, and safety components.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, cooling, steering, suspension, and brake systems.
  • Identify developing problems, recommend needed repairs, and remove unsafe equipment from service in coordination with supervisors.
  • Perform field repairs and respond to equipment breakdowns when practical.
  • Determine whether repairs can be completed in-house or require an outside vendor; assist with transport and coordination of vendor repairs.
  • Track mileage, engine hours, service intervals, inspections, parts used, and repair history; notify supervisors of upcoming maintenance needs.
  • Assist with receiving and inspecting new vehicles and equipment and preparing them for service.
  • Operate City vehicles and equipment as needed for testing, maintenance, transport, or operational support.
  • Follow safe work practices and properly handle and dispose of used oil, filters, batteries, tires, fluids, and other regulated materials.
  • Maintain an orderly inventory of commonly used parts, filters, fluids, lubricants, tires, tools, and shop supplies.
  • Monitor stock levels, receive and store supplies, document materials used, and notify the supervisor when items should be reordered.
  • Maintain accountability for City-owned tools and report damaged, missing, or unsafe equipment.
  • Keep the shop, equipment yard, tools, and work areas clean, safe, and organized.
  • Assist Public Works crews and perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three or more years of relevant diesel, fleet, agricultural, construction, or heavy-equipment experience.
  • Experience with hydraulic systems, 12/24-volt electrical systems, welding, fabrication, or fleet preventive-maintenance programs.
  • CDL, ASE, diesel, heavy-equipment, or other applicable technical certification, or ability to obtain a CDL within a period established by the City.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience performing automotive, diesel, agricultural, construction-equipment, or heavy-equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to obtain any additional license or certification required for assigned duties.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and ability to safely perform routine maintenance and repairs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Working knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, preventive maintenance practices, and general automotive or heavy-equipment repair.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems and safely use common shop tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to read service manuals, specifications, parts diagrams, and maintenance schedules and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to prioritize work based on safety and operational need, work independently, and communicate effectively with employees, supervisors, and vendors.
