Job Summary: The Shop Manager is responsible for working with the Corporate Maintenance Director, Terminal Manager, Maintenance Manager, and Technicians to maintain and repair vehicles and to ensure the maintenance operations run smoothly and meet the standards of Student Transportation of America, as well as State and Federal Regulations.

Description: The Shop Manager oversees vehicle maintenance and repair, supervises maintenance staff, manages repair operations, ensures compliance with regulations, and maintains safety and quality standards.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Supervise maintenance staff, including hiring, disciplinary actions, performance evaluations, and training.
  • Check repair orders, inspect completed work, and communicate with Dispatch about vehicle availability.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical issues; train mechanics and recommend procedures.
  • Coordinate services, groundskeeping, parts inventory, and subcontract repair work.
  • Ensure fleet inspections and repairs are performed per policies and regulations.
  • Address defects promptly, prepare reports, and track warranty and recall repairs.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs, operate shop equipment, and supervise staff.
  • Maintain a clean and safe shop environment.
  • Ensure repairs are cost-effective and efficient.
  • Coordinate work schedules, develop quality control programs, and provide technical advice.
  • Research maintenance techniques, write reports, and assist in vehicle replacement evaluations.
  • Manage outside vendors and service contracts.
  • Audit parts, tools, and fuel inventories for accuracy.
  • Assist in drafting policies and procedures; recommend equipment and bus replacements.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations daily.
  • Respond to after-hours and emergency situations as needed.
  • May drive as a substitute driver occasionally.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of tools, procedures, safety rules for gasoline, diesel, and alternative-powered equipment.
  • Proficiency with PC and software applications.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State regulations, including EPA and OSHA.
  • Operational knowledge of motorized vehicles and shop equipment.
  • Ability to schedule, prioritize, inspect, and diagnose mechanical defects.
  • Propane/gasoline medium-duty truck engine experience preferred.
  • ASE Certification(s) a plus.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment (up to 100 lbs) and operate hand tools and shop equipment.
  • Attend work reliably, pass background checks, and comply with policies.
  • This is a safety-sensitive job regulated by the DOT.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; specialized repair courses preferred.
  • 2-3 years’ experience as a technician in school bus, trucking, or heavy equipment.
  • Valid Driver’s License with CDL, passenger, and school bus endorsements or ability to obtain within 90 days.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment safely and provide own hand tools.
  • Possession of a valid CDL and DOT physical or ability to obtain within 3 months.

Physical Requirements: Regularly climb, walk, push/pull, reach, perform repetitive motions, sit, talk, see, hear, stoop/stretch, stand, lift, and perform a combination of these activities frequently. Frequency levels range from rarely to frequently as described.
