Job Description

Shop Foreman @ Transportation

Purpose:

Responsible for on-site leadership of vehicle repair and maintenance. Perform major mechanical repairs with no supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of all district vehicles.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

• High school graduate or GED
• Hold a valid class B - CDL license with “P” and “S” endorsements

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Capable of managing personnel, supplies and equipment
• Advanced knowledge of automotive and bus mechanics and maintenance
• Able to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently
• Able to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam
• Able to communicate effectively and take initiative
• Able to access, read, and interpret documents such as safety regulations, operating and maintenance inspection rules, procedure manuals, and vehicle service manuals
• Able to receive and give written and verbal instructions
• Able to direct and supervise personnel
• Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Experience:

• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as mechanic with truck or school bus fleet
• AISD bus experience preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Maintenance and Repair

• Manage shop to achieve maximum efficiency from personnel and equipment.
• Assign work to vehicle mechanics, mechanic assistants, and bus maintenance workers. Oversee completion of work and inspect completed work for quality.
• Train, supervise, and evaluate shop personnel.
• Process and prioritize vehicle repair work orders. Evaluate and recommend all repairs and calculate cost estimates. Arrange for outside repairs when work cannot be performed in shop.
• Set procedures for preventative maintenance program including all vehicles and keeps abreast of new technology.
• Consult with other mechanics to help resolve repair problems and help train mechanics and mechanic assistant.
• Perform major and minor mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and inspections on all district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner and without supervision. Maintain accurate, up-to-date preventative maintenance records.
• Rebuild, replace, or repair vehicle parts such as engines, brakes, transmission lines, electrical assemblies, and accessories.

Inventory and Inspection

• Conduct annual inventory of equipment and supplies. Recommend replacement of equipment when needed.
• Perform state safety inspections for all district vehicles.

Safety

• Conduct In-Service Programs periodically for all shop personnel to improve safety.
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
• Ensure shop, equipment, and tools are kept in safe operating condition.
• Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

Other

• Assist in compiling department budget.
• Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required.
• Operate bus and vehicles as needed.
• Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
• Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
• Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
• Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
• Perform other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Direct the work of assigned personnel.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Manual Trades - Maintenance Personnel.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals; district vehicle

Posture: Prolonged standing, kneeling/squatting bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; may work in tiring and uncomfortable positions over, in and under vehicles

Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding; regular grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching

Lifting: Frequent heavy lifting and carrying up to 90 pounds on a daily basis

Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery, hard or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, vibration; exposure to chemical and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
