A leading company in Gainesville, Georgia, is seeking a skilled mechanic to perform maintenance and repair on heavy construction equipment and vehicles. The role involves supervising mechanics, maintaining records, and ensuring quality repairs. Candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent, along with five years of mechanical repair experience. A valid driver's license is required, and the position entails safety-sensitive responsibilities, including random drug testing.
Perform difficult skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of heavy construction equipment, automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, as well as other large specialized vehicles and equipment including diagnosis and preventative maintenance activities. Responsible for day to day planning and supervision of the mechanic(s) in the Department of Water Resources as well as maintaining service schedules, vehicle repair records, and ordering necessary shop supplies.
Plans and coordination of daily work assignments. Evaluates work requested by other divisions of DWR; determines time and personnel requirements.
Instructs and oversees mechanic(s) in performing skilled maintenance work including the repair, adjustment and maintenance of motor vehicles and gasoline and diesel-powered construction equipment. Assists mechanics as required.
Maintains accurate and complete maintenance and repair records for DWR vehicles and equipment using multiple software systems to support the Department’s Asset Management Program and prepares various reports as needed.
Responsible for vehicle points tracking for the scheduled replacement of vehicles and equipment, which is a vital role in the department’s yearly budgetary process.
Monitors and assists in maintaining inventory of supplies; determines prices and specifications; places orders for needed equipment, parts and supplies, including gas, diesel fuel, grease, oil, chemicals, parts, etc.
Establishes priorities for vehicle and equipment repairs.
Conducts checks of vehicles after maintenance and repairs to ensure job quality.
Reviews vehicle repair issues.
Performs complex skilled mechanic work in repairing and overhauling diesel engines, transmissions and axles on heavy construction equipment; repairing hydraulic lines, hoses, pumps and cylinders; and repairing electrical and fuel systems.
Performs routine scheduled preventive maintenance on vehicles, including tune-ups, changing oil and filters, changing air filters, rotating tires, checking and filling transmission and brake fluids.
Operates test equipment in detecting mechanical defects in equipment. Make decisions determining repair or replacement of defective units or related parts.
Repair various specialty equipment, air compressors, pneumatic accessories, pumps, and related machinery and small equipment.
Installs and repairs dump bodies; may customize vehicles to include installing and repairing lights, sirens, spotlights, cages and decals on emergency vehicles, or constructing truck beds for specialized use; welds and completes all types of metal fabrication.
May perform skilled mechanic work in repair and maintenance of automobiles and trucks.
Travels to job sites to diagnose and/or repair equipment or perform routine maintenance activities.
Obtains and delivers parts as required.
Completes and signs work orders and cleans work area.
May perform repairs and maintain 50 small air-cooled engines, weed-eaters, lawnmowers and edgers.
Performs other related duties as required.Education and Experience:
High School or vocational school diploma or G.E.D. supplemented with coursework in auto mechanics.
Five years of mechanical repair experience.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Class C Driver’s License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) required; Class B or A Driver's License (depending on assigned vehicle) preferred.
Due to the safety-sensitive nature of this position, incumbents will be subject to random drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of supervisory techniques and the ability or oversee and direct multiple subordinates.
Knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for repairing, over-hauling and maintaining automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment.
Knowledge of principles of hydraulics and electrical and mechanical systems related to gasoline and diesel equipment operation.
Knowledge of and ability to perform automotive and heavy equipment repair and maintenance.
Knowledge of and skill in welding.
Skill in use of hand tools.
Ability to operate diagnostic and test equipment and utilize test results to determine mechanical defects and corrective measures.
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
Ability to give directions to and gain compliance from subordinates.
Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds.
Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
