Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work independently to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve technical welding issues during ship fabrication and construction.
  • Develop and qualify Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) in compliance with NAVSEA, AWS D1.1, ASME, MIL-STD, and ABS standards.
  • Select appropriate welding methods (Gas Metal Arc Welding, Shielded Metal Arc Welding , Tungsten Inert Gas Welding and Flux-Cored Arc Welding) based on material, cost, and structural requirements for steel and aluminum structures.
  • Ensure the correct selection of base metals, filler materials, shielding gases, and joint configurations for shipboard applications.
  • Interpret contract and design requirements to prepare professional-grade documentation and deliverables.
  • Monitor welding production processes to ensure adherence to quality standards and participate in root cause analysis of weld failures or nonconformance.
  • Supervise and guide assigned welding technicians, engineers, or subcontractors in the execution of tasks.
  • Support the development and implementation of NDT procedures including visual inspection, RT, UT, PT, and MT to validate weld integrity.
  • Participate in product improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing weld quality, reducing rework, and increasing efficiency, including potential automation or robotic welding solutions.
  • Coordinate with quality assurance, planning, production, and NAVSEA representatives to validate welding methods and inspection criteria.
  • Ensure all activities comply with safety policies and procedures, including heat input management and distortion control for aluminum modules.
  • Track and report progress against schedule and budget commitments and contribute to earned value management metrics.
  • Contribute to design reviews by providing input on weld accessibility, manufacturability, and long-term structural durability.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • May directly supervise 2 to 8 team members including welding technicians, drafters, or junior engineers.
  • Responsibilities include training, work assignment, performance evaluation, and problem resolution.
  • Demonstrates leadership aligned with company values, fostering a safe, respectful, and collaborative work environment.


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field; or High School Diploma/GED with 13 years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience with increasing responsibility in welding or shipbuilding engineering.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Six Sigma or LEAN certification preferred.


Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings, welding symbols, and applicable codes (AWS, NAVSEA).
