Job description

This position is an anticipated vacancy. It is expected to be vacant by 05/16/2025. However, the current incumbent has a right to rescind their retirement, leave, or resignation up until the day of the expected vacancy date. Your hire will not be confirmed until the position is vacated, and you may start the year as a Long-Term Substitute if the position does not become vacant by the start of the school year.

Overview:

Founded in 1647, Boston Public Schools (BPS) is the oldest public school district in the country. With approximately 57,000 students from over 114 different countries, nearly 8,000 employees, and an annual budget of $973 million, BPS is the largest district in Massachusetts and one of the most diverse as well.

Currently, BPS has 128 schools utilizing three food service delivery models: 46 schools with full service kitchens and full-time cafeteria staff, and 78 satellite sites receiving meals from an outside vendor.

Department Facts:
  • Mission: offer students safe, wholesome, nutritious, enjoyable meals to fuel academic excellence
  • Meals served: approximately 23,500 breakfasts and 35,600 lunches daily; about 8,000 after-school meals; 22,000 summer meals
  • BPS utilizes Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), providing free meals to all Boston students
Job Responsibilities:
  • Receive and log all incoming orders and dry goods
  • Operate electric pallet jack or forklift to transport products
  • Break down product into pallets; tag for storage
  • Store items in designated cold and dry storage
  • Select and transport bulk items for packing and distribution
  • Load trucks for distribution according to plan
  • Inspect products for quality and temperature compliance
  • Track vendor and purchase dates
  • Deliver food and non-food items as needed
  • Maintain sanitation of distribution bins and trucks
  • Maintain product quality and integrity
  • Ensure adherence to food safety and facility safety standards
  • Perform quality control checks
  • Take corrective actions as necessary, communicating issues
  • Work effectively in a team environment
  • Maintain sanitation and maintenance of work areas and trucks
  • Follow all safety and sanitation standards (HACCP, OSHA, City of Boston)
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED, including basic computer skills
  • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license with good record
  • Valid Forklift License/Certification
  • Food Handler Certification
  • Proficiency in English (written and verbal)
  • 2-5 years of warehouse experience
  • Knowledge of shipping and receiving practices
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow directions
  • Basic math skills
  • Flexibility, multitasking ability, high productivity
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Physical ability to walk, stand, reach, stoop, lift, carry, bend, pivot
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Endurance to work in refrigerated environments and for extended periods
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Valid CDL License
  • Serv-Safe Certification (Managers)
  • Over 5 years of warehouse experience
  • Hydraulic lift experience
  • Knowledge of shipping and receiving practices
  • Proficiency with inventory software and systems
  • Familiarity with modern warehousing practices
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Spanish language skills
Terms:

Grade 3, Step 1

City of Boston Residency required

Bargaining Unit: AFSCME

Schedule: 12-month position

Hours: 6:00 am to 2:00 pm*
