Job description

This position is a temporary vacancy covering for a Shipping & Receiving Worker on leave. The position is expected to end when the current Shipping & Receiving Worker returns to work.

Reports to: Distribution Center Manager

Subject to change based on operational needs, including potential work during school closings.

Overview:

Founded in 1647, Boston Public Schools (BPS) is the oldest public school district in the country. With approximately 57,000 students from over 114 countries, nearly 8,000 employees, and an annual budget of $973 million, BPS is the largest district in Massachusetts and one of the most diverse.

Currently, BPS has 128 schools utilizing three food service delivery models: 46 schools with full-service kitchens and full-time cafeteria staff, and 78 satellite sites receiving meals from an outside vendor contracted by BPS.

Department Facts:
  • Mission: Offer students safe, wholesome, nutritious, enjoyable meals to fuel academic excellence.
  • Meals served: Approximately 23,500 breakfasts, 35,600 lunches, 8,000 after-school meals daily, plus 22,000 summer meals.
  • BPS utilizes the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), providing free meals to all Boston students.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Receive and log all incoming orders and dry goods.
  • Operate electric pallet jacks or forklifts to transport products, breakdown product into pallets, and tag for storage.
  • Store items in designated cold and dry storage areas.
  • Select and transport bulk items for packing and distribution.
  • Load trucks for distribution according to the Distribution Center plan.
  • Inspect products for quality and temperature compliance, track vendor and purchase dates.
  • Deliver food and non-food items as needed, maintain sanitation of bins and trucks.
  • Maintain product quality and integrity, ensure adherence to food safety and facility safety standards.
  • Perform quality control checks, take corrective actions, and communicate issues.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ensure sanitation and maintenance of work areas, storage, and trucks.
  • Follow all safety and sanitation standards, including HACCP, OSHA, and city regulations.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED, basic computer skills.
  • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license with a good record.
  • Valid forklift license/certification.
  • Food Handler Certification.
  • Proficiency in English (written and verbal).
  • 2-5 years of warehouse experience.
  • Basic knowledge of shipping and receiving practices.
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to follow directions, and perform basic math.
  • Flexible, able to multi-task and maintain high productivity.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse team members.
  • Physical requirements include walking, standing, reaching, stooping, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working in refrigerated environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Valid CDL license.
  • Serv-Safe certification (for managers).
  • Over 5 years of warehouse experience.
  • Experience with hydraulic lift equipment.
  • Knowledge of inventory software and modern warehousing practices.
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Spanish language proficiency.
Terms:

Grade 3, Step 1

City of Boston residency required.

Bargaining Unit: AFSCME

Schedule: 12-month position, 6:00 am to 2:00 pm. Hours may change based on operational needs, including possible work during school closings.
