Job summary

Thai Summit America Corporation in Howell, Michigan is seeking a Shipping Manager to oversee daily Shipping Department operations, ensure on-time shipments, and maintain accurate inventory and customer requirements.

The role provides leadership to the Shipping Team, coordinates with Operations, Inventory, Quality and Customer Service, and drives continuous improvement through EDI, MMOG/LE and customer scorecards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years in shipping, logistics, or manufacturing operations.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience in manufacturing.
  • Strong understanding of shipping processes, inventory control, and transport coordination.
  • Experience with customer-specific systems and EDI.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Shipping Manager

Primary Job Function:

The Shipping Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Shipping Department, ensuring customer requirements are met, shipments are completed accurately and on time, inventory and shipping information is maintained accurately, and all customer-specific requirements and compliance standards are followed.

This position provides leadership to the Shipping Team, coordinates staffing and schedules, monitors shipping performance, manages customer requirements, and works closely with Operations, Inventory, Quality, Materials, and Customer Service to resolve issues and maintain customer satisfaction.

Key Areas of Responsibility:
Shipping Operations & Customer Requirements
  • Verify and manage EDI transactions, including 830, 862, DELFOR, and DELJIT requirements, and resolve EDI load issues.
  • Maintain and add approved customer ship-to locations and customer purchase order requirements.
  • Review daily shipping activity by plant and verify that shipments are properly scheduled and required inventory is available.
  • Review PRP, MRP, and Dispatch Lists to ensure shipping requirements are properly planned and executed.
  • Enter and manage manual customer releases as required.
  • Monitor customer requirements and ensure shipping activities meet established delivery schedules.
  • Pull truck forecasts and communicate transportation requirements for holidays, plant shutdowns, and other schedule changes.
  • Manage weekend shipping schedules and confirm attendance with employees scheduled to work.
  • Maintain and monitor on-time delivery (OTD) charts and communicate performance to management.
Inventory & Material Control
  • Manage and approve cycle count adjustments.
  • Manage customer accumulations, including level changes, annual resets, RMO, and RDR requirements.
  • Generate Standard Cost Activity Reports (SCAR) and investigate inventory adjustments.
  • Investigate and assist with customer short-payment issues.
  • Work with appropriate departments to identify and resolve inventory and shipping discrepancies.
Customer Compliance & Performance
  • Pull, review, and report customer scorecards, including Ford and FCA requirements.
  • Review and communicate customer bulletins from Ford, FCA, and other applicable customers to the team.
  • Submit annual customer compliance requirements, including MMOG, Ford, FCA, Volvo, and Webasto requirements.
  • Review rating modifications in Super G and identify open action items requiring a response.
  • Review and respond to customer surveys through Ford Ascent, Resilic, and other applicable customer systems.
  • Review analytics in Ford Ascent and monitor shipping compliance.
  • Maintain customer-specific shipping requirements and ensure the department remains compliant with customer expectations.
Leadership & Employee Management
  • Lead, supervise, and provide directions to the Shipping Team.
  • Review employee time and attendance, including PTO requests and hourly punch-ins.
  • Maintain the department calendar and communicate staffing requirements.
  • Develop, review, and maintain weekend and holiday staffing schedules.
  • Complete and maintain employee training records and the department training matrix.
  • Submit Training Authorization Requests (TARs) as required.
  • Establish employee expectations and monitor performance to departmental goals.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, safety, quality, and customer-focused performance within the Shipping Department.
  • Responsible for budget development and ongoing budget monitoring to ensure effective allocation of resources and alignment with organizational priorities.
Continuous Improvement & Problem Solving
  • Complete ECR workflow assignments.
  • Complete 8D and 5Y problem-solving activities related to shipping and customer issues.
  • Investigate shipping, inventory, and customer-related problems and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop, update, and maintain department work instructions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve shipping processes, accuracy, efficiency, and customer service.
  • Maintain the Shipping Department scorecard and monitor key performance indicators.
  • Prepare and update executive presentation slides and reports.
  • Maintain accurate departmental records, logs, and performance documentation.
  • Submit freight disputes and maintain the freight dispute log.
  • Monitor transportation requirements and coordinate with internal and external resources to resolve freight and delivery issues.
  • Ensure shipments are scheduled appropriately and transportation requirements are communicated in a timely manner.
  • At least 5 years of previous experience in shipping, logistics, materials, warehouse, or manufacturing operations.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience, preferably in a manufacturing or automotive environment.
  • Strong understanding of shipping processes, customer releases, delivery requirements, inventory control, and transportation coordination.
  • Ability to work with customer-specific systems, portals, EDI transactions, and electronic scheduling requirements.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to analyze reports, scorecards, schedules, and inventory information.
  • Ability to interpret and investigate shipping, inventory, and customer performance data.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, management, customers, suppliers, and transportation providers.
  • Ability to lead a team and hold employees accountable for performance and attendance.
  • Ability to develop, maintain, and follow work instructions and standardized processes.
  • Ability to complete corrective-action and problem-solving activities, including 8D and 5Y methodologies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgement when handling employee, customer, and company information.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting automotive customers such as Ford, FCA/Stellantis, GM, Volvo, or Webasto.
  • Experience with EDI transactions such as 830, 862, DELFOR, and DELJIT.
  • Experience with Ford Ascent, Super G, Resilic, or similar customer portals.
  • Knowledge of MMOG/LE and automotive customer compliance requirements.
  • Experience with MRP, PRP, dispatch, customer release, and production scheduling systems.
  • Experience with customer scorecards, shipping compliance metrics, and OTD reporting.
  • Experience with inventory adjustments, cycle counts, customer accumulations, RMO, and RDR processes.
  • Experience managing freight disputes and transportation-related issues.
