A Marine HVAC Project/Task Supervisor manages shipboard heating, ventilation, air conditioning installation, modernization, and repair. This waterfront role requires leading technical teams, coordinating subcontractors, ensuring adherence to marine safety standards, and acting as the primary liaison to naval shipyards and drydocks.

Leadership & Supervision: Direct on-site HVAC installation, maintenance, and technical teams aboard ships. Manage subcontractors, track daily work hours, and assign tasks.

  • Project Execution: Implement technical project plans, manage project milestones, and oversee quality assurance of deliverables.

  • Administrative Oversight: Track task workloads, write technical status reports, and manage contract details or project trackers (such as POAMs)

  • Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict shipyard and marine safety protocols, environmental rules, and quality control regulations

  • Deep familiarity with marine/shipboard HVAC systems (chillers, air handlers, ventilation ductwork), reading blueprints, and using project software like MS Project or Excel.

  • Ability to work in active shipyards, drydocks, and onboard vessels under varying weather and physical conditions (confined spaces, climbing, lifting).

  • Supervise the installation, fit-up, and securement of rectangular, round, and flexible ductwork per ship drawings, specifications, NAVSEA standards, and applicable NSTM guidance.

  • Lay out and route duct runs through complex ship structures to maintain clearances, access, supports, and airflow objectives.

  • Measure, cut, assemble, and install duct sections, transitions, elbows, fittings, hangers, supports, brackets, and vibration isolation to achieve proper alignment and airflow.

  • Install hangers, supports, brackets, and vibration isolation for duct systems in accordance with approved standards and procedures; install and adjust dampers, access doors, and other duct accessories to enable balancing, inspection, and maintenance.

  • Modify existing duct systems to support SHIPALTS/SCDs, modernization; remove/relocate/replace duct sections while integrating with the existing distribution system.

  • Install, align, and support shipboard fans and related ventilation components in accordance with NSTM S9086-RS-STM-010/512 (Fans); coordinate sealed, properly oriented, vibration-isolated duct connections.

  • Support balancing and airflow verification; assist HVAC technicians/engineers during startup and testing to confirm ductwork and fan configurations meet design criteria.

  • Troubleshoot airflow issues related to duct layout, obstructions, improper fit-up, or fan installation.

  • Complete work orders, installation records, redlines, and configuration updates for all ductwork and fan-related changes.

  • Follow Navy, shipyard, and company standards for materials, insulation requirements, fire boundaries, and watertight/airtight penetrations.

  • Apply requirements from NSTM S9086-RQ-STM-A10, Chapter 510 – HVAC Systems for Surface Ships, and NSTM S9086-RS-STM-010/512 – Fans.

  • Adhere to OSHA and shipyard safety regulations, including confined space, fall protection, and lockout/tagout where applicable.

  • Coordinate work with shipfitters, welders, electricians, pipefitters, HVAC technicians, planners, and Navy personnel to avoid conflicts and rework; provide feedback on design and routing challenges.

  • Provides technical, administrative, and operational leadership to assigned task(s), including contract and subcontractor management.

  • Supervises assigned staff.

  • Participate in the development of technical project plans, proposals, reports, and task order and administrative reporting.

  • May perform high-level technical services on assigned task(s).
