Description
Note: This description covers the management tasks assigned to the role. The remaining hours are dedicated to hourly tasks such as food preparation, production, guest service, and cleaning.
Basic Purpose and Objectives of the Position
The Shift Manager (SM) is an hourly position supporting management with routine administrative and operational tasks within the restaurant. Key responsibilities include:
- Driving excellence in customer service
- Ensuring compliance with company standards for products and facilities
- Reviewing food handling procedures
- Assessing operational processes
The human resources duties of a Shift Manager are limited to crew training, ongoing coaching, and providing feedback to hourly staff. The Shift Manager may also be responsible for opening and closing the restaurant in the absence of management, maintaining administrative control but not acting in a managerial capacity.
Principal Accountabilities
Customer Satisfaction/Product Quality
Ensuring fast, accurate service, positive guest relations, and product consistency with quality standards.
Conducting food safety audits periodically.
Providing ongoing coaching and feedback on customer service, product quality, and speed of service.
Financial
Assisting the management team with daily cash procedures such as bank deposits, making change, safe opening/closing, and drawer verification.
Operations
Performing daily inventory checks, completing food safety audits, and setting up daily control sheets.
Checking facility and equipment readiness.
Monitoring inventory, food prep, and order fulfillment to meet standards.
Overseeing speed of service and resolving bottlenecks to meet goals.
In management's absence, responsible for food and supplies deliveries, and opening and closing the restaurant.
Human Resources
Providing ongoing coaching and feedback to crew.
Offering hands-on training in the Learning Zone.
