Job summary

The City of Hampton is seeking a Lieutenant to lead the Hampton Sheriff’s Office correctional operations during an assigned shift. This role provides operational oversight of the jail, directs Sergeants and Deputies, and ensures a safe, secure environment for inmates, staff, and the public.

The Lieutenant will help maintain compliance with laws, standards, and agency policies while supporting efficient daily operations and emergency response readiness.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field, or equivalent combination.
• Minimum four years supervisory experience in correctional or law enforcement.
• Must pass background investigation.
• Safety sensitive; alcohol and controlled substances testing as required.
• Valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.

Responsibilities

• Supervise Sergeants and Deputies during assigned shifts.
• Oversee daily correctional operations and inmate supervision.
• Conduct facility inspections, review reports, and ensure compliance.
• Lead emergency response efforts and critical incident management.
• Train, mentor, and evaluate staff performance.
• Manage staffing schedules, assignments, and operational readiness.
• Ensure adherence to policies, accreditation standards, and legal requirements.
• Maintain safety, security, and order within the facility.
