Job summary

The State of Delaware Department of Correction seeks a Correctional Lieutenant to serve as Shift Commander at CCTC, bridging Administration and frontline staff. The role oversees security, discipline, and supervision, guiding staff and ensuring safe operations across shifts.

Incumbents supervise custody and treatment staff, maintain logs, and may participate in riot control and K-9 related duties, with emphasis on leadership, performance reviews, and professional development.

Qualifications

• Two years as Correctional Staff Sergeant or four years in equivalent CO series.
• Two years experience in staff supervision (planning, assigning, evaluating work).
• One year enforcing institutional rules and improving security procedures.
• Valid Driver’s License (not suspended or revoked).

Responsibilities

• Maintains control of inmates while escorting individuals or groups within the prison.
• Keeps accurate head counts of inmates at the security post.
• Conducts shakedowns of inmates and searches inmates, visitors, staff and blocks for contraband.
• Operates manual and electronic locking systems.
• Enforces rules and procedures governing inmate discipline, security and safety.
• Observes inmate activities to detect threats to security or safety.
• Ensures inmates meet care standards in living areas and hygiene.
• Maintains custody during transport to other institutions or court appearances.
• Prepares and maintains daily logs and routine incident reports on the shift.
• May train and care for K-9s (feeding, grooming, kennel maintenance).
• May assist in riot control and pursuit of escapees.
