Job description

SHERIFF'S FACILITIES MECHANIC

In addition to performance-based merit increases, this position is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following dates: Effective June 28, 2024 – 4.25% increase, Effective June 27, 2025 – 4.00% increase.

RECRUITMENT / POSITION INFORMATION
This recruitment is being conducted to establish an Open Eligible List to fill vacancies within the Sheriff's Department, until the next recruitment. This list may be utilized to fill positions of lower level classifications within the same occupational series.
Some positions in this job classification may be assigned to work schedules that include weekends, evening shift, or night shift and may be assigned to work in a Correctional Facility. Night shift or Evening shift differential is paid in addition to hourly salary as listed. An employee who is regularly assigned to a Correctional Facility shall be paid an additional $1.00 per hour. Incumbents may be required to work inside the Coroner's Division.

General duties of a Sheriff's Facilities Mechanic include performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the areas of electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, mechanical, welding, food services equipment, detention equipment, carpentry, and related repairs to provide maintenance for buildings and associated equipment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will demonstrate related education, experience and training in the areas listed below:

  • Use and operate an electric multi-meter, with heavy emphasis on electrical troubleshooting.
  • Proficient with computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Understanding and following oral and written directions.
  • Inspect and diagnose malfunctions of electrical, mechanical, and structural problems and determine appropriate course of action.
  • Has the ability to communicate orally and in writing.

(1) year of hands-on maintenance repairing one or more of the following:

  • Electric and gas fired ovens.
  • Commercial food preparation equipment.
  • Folger Adams and Southern Steel detention equipment.
  • Commercial laundry washer/extractors and dryers.
  • Enclosed track conveyor systems, air conditioning, gas and arc welding methods.
  • Boiler maintenance and associated controls.
  • Work in cold storage boxes with temperatures ranging from 0 to 45 degrees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge in:
The methods, tools and materials of the various building trades; and codes pertinent to the repair of buildings, building facilities and related equipment.

Ability To:

  • Perform a variety of building maintenance and repair work in the electrical, mechanical, carpentry and plumbing trades.
  • Skillfully use standard hand and power tools.
  • Diagnose the cause of electrical, mechanical and structural problems and determine appropriate course of action.
  • Make safe, skillful repairs to electrical and mechanical systems and structural facilities.
  • Work independently with minimum instruction and without direct supervision.
  • Work from blueprints and sketches, oral and written instructions.
  • Work in close proximity to inmates.

License Required: Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher, by date of appointment.

The following is a description of the physical abilities necessary to perform the essential job functions of this position:

Environmental Conditions:

  • Incumbents may be required to work inside of a jail facility and in close proximity to inmates.
  • Work outside or drive in inclement weather conditions.
  • May have exposure to steam, chemicals and occasionally work in room temperatures of 90-100 degrees.

Physical Requirements:

  • Confined Manual dexterity to operate hand tools and other machinery.
  • Pass initial asbestos physical examination and subsequent periodic examination in order to be issued and utilize a respirator.
  • Body strength to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Vision to distinguish and identify colors.
  • Physical agility to perform bending and stooping activities.
  • Confined to small spaces; climb ladders, scaffolding and poles.

SELECTION PROCESS
Sheriff Human Resources screens all applications and supplemental information to identify the qualified candidates. After screening, the qualified candidates will be referred to the next step in the recruitment process.

Written Exam: (Refer/Non-Refer) The Written Exam is a multiple-choice test consists of: Electrical and Electrical Diagram, Plumbing, General Mechanical/Safety/HVACR, Shop Math and Carpentry. Candidates need a passing score on this examination in order to continue in the next step.

Oral Panel Interview/Performance Test: (Weighted 100 %) Candidates will be interviewed and rated by a panel of job knowledge experts. Each candidate's rating will be based on responses to a series of structured questions designed to elicit the candidate's qualifications for the job. In addition, candidates will also be required to take a performance test to include the use of an electrical diagnostic tool. Candidate's responses to the structured questions should be thorough, detailed and complete.

Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedures.

ELIGIBLE LIST
Candidates must achieve a passing score in every component of the selection process in order to be placed on the eligible list.
