Job summary

ICL in New York is seeking a Unit Counselor to support residents by providing care, socialization, crisis intervention, and facility monitoring across shelter programs. The role emphasizes orientation, ongoing communication, and crisis response.

The position requires a high school diploma and some human services experience, with a food handlers certificate within 45 days. NYS driver’s license preferred; onsite work schedule is Saturday to Wednesday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, with competitive benefits.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience: Some experience in a human services setting.
• Certifications/Licenses: Must obtain a food handlers certificate within 45 days of hire (Hylan Shelter only).
• Certifications/Licenses: Valid NYS Driver’s License preferred.
• Work Eligibility: Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

• Participate in or conduct orientation for new residents.
• Communicate program processes and activities to residents.
• Provide social support and motivational interviewing interventions.
• Provide transportation for residents to appointments as needed.
• Assist with meal-related activities including warming, serving, and cleanup.
• Document neighborhood activities and resident interactions.
• Participate in crisis intervention as needed.
• Attend management, supervision, and required training meetings.
• Report serious incidents and complete required incident documentation.
• Conduct hourly rounds and ensure resident wellbeing.
• Arrive to work on time and as scheduled.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
