The Arizona Humane Society is seeking a dedicated Shelter Medical Veterinary Technician II for the South Mountain Campus. The role runs Thursday through Sunday, 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM, providing medical support and compassionate care to animals in need.

Responsibilities include assisting veterinarians in treatments, surgeries, diagnostics, radiology, and dentistry, while maintaining medical records and ensuring clinic cleanliness.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years experience at veterinary hospital or clinic; CVT not required.
• Must know phlebotomy, immunology, parasitology, endocrinology, and pharmacology.
• Proficiency in safe animal handling, TPR, vaccines, meds, labs, medical math, and records.
• Ability to assist DVM with surgery, radiology, dentistry, diagnostics, patient care and recovery.
• Ability to perform advanced procedures such as surgical assistance, anesthesia monitoring, wound care, dental work.

Day in the Life:

The Arizona Humane Society is seeking a compassionate and skilled Shelter Medical Veterinary Technician to support our veterinary team in providing exceptional care to animals in need. In this role, you will assist veterinarians with medical treatments, surgeries, diagnostics, radiology, dentistry, laboratory procedures, and client education, while also independently evaluating animals to help determine adoptability and appropriate care plans.

Responsibilities include administering treatments and vaccines, performing physical exams and diagnostic testing, assisting with routine and orthopedic surgeries, maintaining accurate medical records, preparing laboratory samples, and ensuring clinic cleanliness and organization. This position also involves following Fear Free handling techniques, supporting euthanasia procedures when necessary, training junior staff, and helping create a safe, compassionate environment for both animals and clients.

Job Requirements

• High school diploma/GED required.
• Completion of a veterinary technician training program preferred
• Minimum 2 years experience at a veterinary hospital or clinic. CVT not required.
• Must know phlebotomy, immunology, parasitology, endocrinology, and pharmacology.
• Proficiency with safe and humane animal handling skills, TPR, vaccines, medication administration, laboratory procedures, medical math, veterinary terminology, documentation, and medical records.
• Ability to assist DVM with surgery, radiology, dentistry, diagnostics, patient care and recovery.
• Ability to perform advanced technical procedures such as surgical assistance, anesthesia monitoring and support, advanced wound care, bandaging and splinting, dental cleanings and procedures, advanced fluid therapy, and sampling techniques.
• Strong competency in emergency response and critical care support.
• Ability to mentor or support training of junior staff.
• Must possess excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and time management skills.
• Able to speak, read and write English; Spanish language helpful.
• Ability to perform medical mathematical equations.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, balance, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently use hands and fingers to handle, feel, restrain, or operate medical equipment, instruments, and animals. The position requires the ability to communicate effectively, including talking, hearing, and observing animal behavior and medical conditions.

This role requires frequent interaction with animals of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions. The employee must be able to safely handle and restrain animals, with or without assistance, and may occasionally assist in lifting and/or moving animals, equipment, or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.

There will be exposure to dust, heat, cold and temperature changes; wet floors, and animal noises, odors and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical air conditioned and heated office environment.
