Job summary

S:US is seeking a Cook for our Men's Shelter in Brooklyn to develop nutritious daily menus and oversee meal preparation for residents, including those with special dietary needs. The role includes preparing low-fat and low-sodium options, managing food orders and inventory, and ensuring sanitary handling in line with NYC/NYSDOH regulations.

Some weekend/evening hours are required. You will train residents in basic nutrition and cooking skills, participate in staff meetings, and uphold SUS

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in all aspects of food preparation and kitchen management in a large institutional setting.
  • NY State Food Handlers Certificate required; additional nutritional training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare low-fat, low-sodium, vegetarian and soft meal options to meet special dietary needs.
  • Assist in managing and performing food and equipment ordering and inventory.
  • Ensure safe and sanitary handling and storage of all food items per NYC/NYSDOH guidelines.
  • Supervise kitchen area cleanliness, equipment maintenance, and trainee instruction.
  • Contribute to Daily Cooking and Nutrition training for Shelter Residents to promote independent living.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as needed.
  • Train residents in basic nutrition, meal prep, and kitchen safety according to guidelines.
