Job summary

The Salvation Army New Britain Men’s Shelter is seeking a part-time shelter supervisor to provide daily oversight, intake, and support services for guests in a Housing First environment. Responsibilities include triage, intake, room setup, policy enforcement, safety, and ongoing communication with supervisors.

The role requires English fluency, a High School Diploma/GED, the ability to work holidays, and compassion for at‑risk populations.

Qualifications

• Fluency in English required; Spanish-speaking ability preferred.
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Ability to work holidays.
• Experience working with at-risk populations and/or homelessness preferred.
• Sensitivity to cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of the population served.
• Commitment to empowering others to solve their problems.
• Basic computer knowledge (MS Office).
• Empathetic and caring approach.

Responsibilities

• Triage requests for emergency shelter and serve as first point of contact.
• Assist households to self-resolve housing crises using shelter diversion techniques.
• Prepare intake packages for households not diverted at entrance.
• Set up rooms, sleeping arrangements and storage for clients.
• Review policies with clients at entrance and ensure program guidelines are followed.
• Provide safety, respect, and effective service delivery.
• Assess client needs and assist with housing goals per housing plan.
• Attend mandatory trainings and staff meetings.
• Maintain logs, incident reports and keep areas clean and hazard-free.
• Respond to security/safety emergencies and disturbances promptly.
