Job summary

Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center is seeking an Animal Welfare Specialist to ensure high-quality care and compassionate service. You will perform medical and behavioral evaluations, direct animal care, and coordinate kennel sanitation while communicating clearly with the public.

Responsibilities include vaccinations, testing, micro-chipping, adoption counseling, handling reports of cruelty, and assisting with euthanasia as needed, in line with Center policies.

Qualifications

• Associates degree in a related field.
• Two years of related experience in animal welfare.

Responsibilities

• Provides high quality customer service to the general public.
• Treats the public in a courteous and respectful manner; assists with adoption counseling, surrenders, receiving complaints and advice on animal welfare issues.
• Examines all incoming animals; administers vaccinations, heartworm and feline leukemia testing, micro-chipping, grooming, and daily medical treatments.
• Conducts adoption counseling sessions, surrenders, and Return To Owners.
• Receives reports of cruelty/neglect and provides advice on animal welfare.
• Participates in euthanasia process in accordance with Center policies.
• Arranges transfers between organizations and monitors feral cat colonies; secures resources for indigent clients.
• Makes arrangements for spay/neuter and other medical appointments.
• Assists with animal emergencies and law enforcement cases as directed.
• Ensures shelter animals receive best possible care; observes signs of illness or injury.
• Cleans and disinfects kennels; handles feeding, water, bedding.
• Works with Chameleon Software and handles necessary transactions.
• Adheres to systems, methods, and procedures in accordance with humane and business standards.
