Job summary

City of Houston seeks an Animal Care Technician for the BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions/Kennel unit. You will provide humane care for shelter animals, maintain facilities, and document activities in shelter software.

Requires a high school diploma or GED; one year of general work experience preferred. Must obtain an Euthanasia Certification within one year; a Texas Driver License is required. Veterans encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

• Cleans and disinfects kennels, wards, cages, equipment, runs and other areas of the facility.
• Humanely handles and kennels all animals and tags or bands animals before kenneling.
• Provides food, water and proper care of all shelter animals by adhering to schedules and protocols.
• Provides vaccination, microchipping, FIV/FEV testing and treatment of all shelter animals.
• Monitors animals for signs of illness or unusual behavior and reports problems.
• Performs euthanasia of animals by injecting selected animals with controlled substances in accordance with policy.
• Maintains accurate and legible case files and records; inputs data into shelter software.
• Provides information and assists the public in search of lost or adoptable pets.
