Job summary

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking an Environmental Specialist II to inspect shellfish processing facilities and verify compliance with state and federal rules. This role collects samples, prepares reports, and supports shellfish regulatory programs.

You will provide technical guidance to the shellfish industry, conduct field work, and perform travel as needed to ensure public health protections and regulatory compliance across facilities.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma plus 1 year in environmental protection or related field.
  • Six months as Environmental Specialist I or higher with the State of Florida.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Requires possession of a valid Class E Driver License.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and evaluates shellfish processing facilities for license certification under state and federal rules.
  • Determines sanitary condition compliance with regulations.
  • Collects and ships water and meat samples to central lab for analysis.
  • Provides technical assistance and educational outreach to the shellfish industry.
  • Reviews Shellfish Processing Certification applications.
  • Prepares electronic and written inspection and sample reports.
  • Conducts food-borne illness investigations with other agencies.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
