Job summary

Grand Traverse County is seeking a Water Distribution & Sewer Maintenance Technician to operate, repair, and maintain water systems and sewer collection networks. You will locate lines, install meters, repair hydrants and mains, and supervise contractor work as needed.

The role requires basic education, some field experience, and relevant licenses. Candidates must be able to work outdoors in varying conditions and handle emergencies with sound judgment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required; technical training preferred.
• Six months experience in sewer and water system operation/maintenance preferred.
• Licenses: D-4 Limited Treatment, S-4 Distribution; CDL Class B with tank & air brake endorsements.
• Ability to read plans, diagrams, and prints; good math and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Locate and mark underground water and sewer lines and valves.
• Install, service, repair, and test water meters and water services.
• Repair hydrants, mains, and service lines; inspect sewer lines and manholes.
• Maintain records, logs, and daily activity reports; monitor supplies and equipment.
• Oversee contractors during excavation near utilities; ensure safety and compliance.
