Job summary

City of Syracuse is seeking a Sewer Maintenance Worker to perform specialized manual work in cleaning and maintaining sewer lines and mains. Under supervision, the position involves operating sewer equipment and working under adverse weather conditions.

Hazard awareness, physical strength, and ability to follow written and oral instructions are required. A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL B) is mandatory at appointment and throughout employment.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of safety measures while working in sewer maintenance
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions

Responsibilities

• Cleans sewer main lines; repairs sewer breaks, cave ins, and street holes to mains and performs a variety of tasks associated with sewer maintenance activities
• May operate motor equipment in the transport of workers, materials and equipment to, from and on work sites
• Inspects conditions of sewer lines and mains
• Replaces access hole covers that are damaged
• Assists in operating sewer-rod equipment and busket machines
• Operates jackhammers and other equipment used in sewer maintenance work
• When assigned to Department of Public Works, may operate a dump truck in connection with the removal of snow and ice
• Checks working condition of equipment; gives routine service and maintenance
• May instruct and train personnel in the use and handling of specified pieces of motor equipment as directed by supervisor
• May perform job duties associated with the Motor Equipment Operator I classification
• May perform job duties associated with the installation and maintenance of traffic signs and road markings
• When assigned to the Department of Public Works: In addition to all work activities listed above, also operates snow removal equipment to clear City streets of snow.

The work involves responsibility for the performance of specialized manual work in variety of tasks related to the cleaning and maintenance of sewer lines and mains. Under the supervision of a higher level worker or a crew leader, an employee in this class performs semi-skilled manual work requiring the use of a variety of sewer equipment and tools to clean and maintain sewer lines and mains. This is physically demanding work requiring knowledge of safety measures and physical strength and agility to work under adverse weather conditions. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Some knowledge of the materials, equipment, and methods currently used in cleaning and maintenance of sewer mains and lines.
• Some knowledge of the hazards and necessary projections in sewer maintenance work and in working under extreme weather conditions.
• Skill in the use of a variety of tools.
• Ability and willingness to do heavy manual work.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Special Necessary Requirement

Candidates must possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL B) issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
