Job summary

OPW, part of Dover, is seeking a Setup Tech in Whitsett, NC. The role involves setting up manual and CNC machines to manufacture valve and regulator parts, reading blueprints, and performing quality checks with precision measuring tools.

The candidate will troubleshoot machine issues, replace worn tooling, and participate in Kaizen and 5S initiatives to improve safety and efficiency on the production floor. This is an onsite position with potential overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Set up manual and CNC mills/lathe machines per specifications.
  • Start, position, secure workpieces; manage bar feeding, cooling, lubrication.
  • Read blueprints; interpret concentricity, runout, surface finish symbols.
  • Identify and contain defects; troubleshoot machine malfunctions.
  • Replace dull tooling and maintain tooling quality.
  • Perform deburring and edge finishing with files and grinders.
  • Take measurements with calipers, micrometers, and gages for QC.
  • Enter QC data using SPC system; document results.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance and cleaning of machines.
  • Participate in 5S safety program and Kaizen events.

This position is based in our Whitsett, NC facility and the base schedule is Monday-Thursday, 3:00 pm to 1:00 am with ability to work overtime as needed.

Scope

Setup Techs are tasked with start-to-finish setup of mill, lathe, and CNC machines to produce high-quality valve and regulator parts. These individuals read blueprints, start and operate manual and CNC machines, perform quality checks with various gaging equipment, and perform minor preventative machine maintenance. We are looking for individuals who have knowledge or experience in machine operations, a keen eye for quality control and safety, the ability to solve problems and perform basic mathematics, and the desire to develop and expand their skills in a production-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Sets up manual/CNC and mill/lathe machines to produce metal valve and regulator parts in accordance with machine specifications.
  • Starts machines, positions and secures workpiece, and engages bar feeding, cooling, and lubricating mechanisms.
  • Reads blueprints and understands symbols for concentricity, runout, surface finish, machined/non-machined surfaces, seat areas, and dimensions.
  • Detects product defects, contains defects, and resolves issues.
  • Works through machine malfunctions, performs basic troubleshooting, and makes minor adjustments as necessary.
  • Replaces dull or worn tooling in machines using hand tools.
  • Removes burrs, sharp edges, and tool marks from products using files, hand grinders, wire brushes, and power tools.
  • Performs quality checks by collecting measurements and dimensions using calipers, go/no go gages, micrometers, height gages, thread gages, concentricity gages and other measuring tools.
  • Enters quality control data using Statistical Process Control System.
  • Performs minor preventative maintenance, such as oiling or cleaning machines, dies, or workpieces, or adding coolant to machine reservoirs.
  • Actively participates in the ECI 6S program centered around work area safety (organization, standardization, and cleanliness) throughout the shift.
  • Actively participates in Kaizen events, a program focused on the continuous improvement of safety and efficiency practices related to individuals and processes within the manufacturing warehouse.
Education and Requirements

  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, and basic shop mathematics, including measuring and effectively using calipers and other measuring tools.
  • Skill in reading and understanding mechanical blueprints.
  • Ability to perform work in a safe manner.

  • Ability to learn new machines and production procedures.
  • Must be a team player and willing to adapt to an ever-changing work environment and engage in continuous personal development.
  • Ability to lift 45 pounds and perform repeated physical tasks.
