Job description

Service Maintenance Worker

The Service Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing a variety of tasks in three main areas: 1) construction, maintenance, and repair of roadways and utilities; 2) buildings and grounds maintenance; and 3) solid waste collection, transfer, and processing.

The worker shall operate with some independence, committed to the City’s mission, and demonstrate ethical conduct, community stewardship, initiative, and responsive service. Effective performance includes clear communication, teamwork, resource management, personal accountability, and responsibility.

Primary Job Duties

Essential functions are marked with an “*” and are based on actual assignments.

General Responsibilities

Perform tasks across three categories: construction, refuse & recycling, and buildings & grounds, with some duties overlapping between categories.

Construction
  • Operate heavy equipment like trucks, tractors, backhoes, etc.
  • Operate specialized street and utility maintenance equipment. *
  • Use power and hand tools. *
  • Adjust and regulate machinery. *
  • Maintain streets, curbs, sidewalks (asphalt, concrete, potholes, markings, signage). *
  • Assist with storm and sewer system repairs and improvements.
  • Plow snow and spread de-icers. *
  • Perform routine and non-routine maintenance on buildings and grounds. *
  • Manual labor as needed. *
  • Follow all safety procedures and attend training. *
  • Complete paperwork accurately.
  • Fill in on other crews as needed. *
Special Qualifications
  • Valid Class B Ohio Commercial Driver's License with Air Brakes and Tanker Endorsements.
  • Availability for rotating standby. *
  • Ability to work in trenches. *
Refuse & Recycling
  • Operate refuse and recycling collection vehicles and related equipment. *
  • Use power and hand tools. *
  • Maintain and inspect equipment. *
  • Complete daily routes for refuse and recycling collection. *
  • Handle large trash and recyclable materials. *
  • Perform maintenance on facilities and equipment. *
  • Manual labor as needed. *
  • Follow safety procedures and attend training. *
  • Complete documentation accurately.
Additional Subclassification Details

Supervision is provided by the Superintendent or Crew Chief. The worker may supervise part-time or intermittent staff.

Work may involve responding to emergencies, working in severe weather, traffic hazards, and physically demanding tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent, ability to perform manual labor, follow instructions, and work safely with minimal supervision. Must meet weight restrictions for ladders and bucket trucks per OSHA standards. Valid Ohio driver’s license with endorsements required.
