Our neighborhood is built on the belief that every individual deserves choice, independence, meaningful relationships, and a fulfilling life.

We're looking for a confident, organized, and hands‑on leader who is passionate about developing strong teams, maintaining high standards, and ensuring the individuals we support receive exceptional, person‑centered services.

About the Role

The Service Director is responsible for overseeing the daily delivery of residential support services and providing direct leadership to our team of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs).

This position is essential to ensuring services are delivered safely, consistently, and in accordance with each individual's approved Individual Support Plan (ISP), Vanguard Landing policies, and applicable Virginia DBHDS standards.

Our ideal candidate is a proactive problem‑solver, an effective communicator, and a leader who knows how to balance compassion with accountability.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Staff Development

  • Supervise, mentor, coach, and support Direct Support Professionals.

  • Develop, implement, and manage DSP schedules to maintain appropriate staffing and consistent coverage.

  • Coordinate staffing adjustments, overtime requests, and coverage needs.

  • Participate in DSP recruitment, interviews, orientation, training coordination, performance management, and separation processes.

  • Conduct regular staff meetings, communicate expectations, and provide ongoing performance feedback.

  • Complete annual employee performance evaluations and support professional development.

  • Monitor required staff training, competency verification, and compliance with training schedules.

Resident Services & Person-Centered Support

  • Oversee the delivery of safe, consistent, individualized residential services.

  • Ensure DSPs understand and implement residents' approved Individual Support Plans (ISPs).

  • Promote resident independence, meaningful engagement, personal choice, and quality of life.

  • Support staff in implementing individualized behavior support strategies and daily routines.

  • Help ensure residents have opportunities for skill development, activities, and community participation.

  • Foster positive relationships with residents, families, guardians, and community partners.

Quality Assurance & Service Oversight

  • Monitor and review DSP documentation to ensure accurate, timely, and complete records of services and supports.

  • Review and approve service delivery information for billing documentation purposes.

  • Support compliance with applicable DBHDS regulations and organizational policies.

  • Assist leadership with programmatic information and implementation of operational requirements related to licensure.

  • Help maintain residential environments that are safe, clean, organized, and welcoming.

  • Identify service concerns, communicate effectively with leadership, and follow through on corrective improvements.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Serve as an approachable and dependable leader for DSPs.

  • Facilitate resident and family meetings within required timeframes.

  • Communicate concerns promptly, professionally, and respectfully.

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and other leadership team members to continuously strengthen service quality and staff performance.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum of one year of experience creating, implementing, directing, supervising, or overseeing services and supports for individuals with disabilities.

  • Associate degree or college-level education.

  • Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to successfully complete required criminal background and Central Registry clearances.

  • Documented tuberculosis screening clearance.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in human services, education, psychology, social work, or a related field.

  • Experience supervising Direct Support Professionals in residential or community-based disability services.

  • Familiarity with Virginia DBHDS regulations, Individual Support Plans, and person-centered service delivery.

  • Experience with employee scheduling, training, coaching, performance evaluations, and documentation oversight.

What Makes a Great Fit?

We're looking for someone who:

  • Leads by example and demonstrates professionalism, integrity, and accountability.

  • Communicates effectively and handles challenges calmly and respectfully.

  • Builds a strong team culture through consistency, encouragement, and clear expectations.

  • Takes initiative and follows through without needing constant direction.

  • Is highly organized and can balance staffing, documentation, communication, and operational priorities.

  • Believes in person-centered services and respects the individuality, dignity, and choices of every resident.

  • Embraces collaboration and brings a positive, solutions-focused attitude to the workplace.
