Job description

Schedule and provide safe transport of inmates in all custody levels, including post-convictions relief (PCR), medical appointments, parole, and extraditions. This includes inmates in safe-keepers (SK), special management units (SMU), security detention (SD), regional courts, and hospital transfers for both males and females.

  1. Assign inmates to the central bus terminal / transport team.
  2. Sergeant will be on 24/7 call for scheduling transports and staffing.
  3. Ensure proper use and training of keys, firearms, chemical munitions, and restraining equipment; ensure all are operational.
  4. Maintain control of security keys/equipment assigned to the hospital.
  5. Ensure safety, order, and control of inmates housed in the community hospital.
  6. Inspect posts to ensure subordinate performance and stay updated on inmate security status.
  7. Respond to complaints and concerns from hospital staff regarding inmates and staff; perform other duties as assigned by security management.
  8. Monitor and ensure transportation vehicles are in high readiness, cleaned, and serviceable.
  9. Ensure communication devices are operational and report/correct vehicle deficiencies.
  10. May be assigned to work in an institutional setting after transportation assessments.
  11. Monitor inmate movement, relieve officers from posts as needed, and perform other duties of a correctional sergeant II.
  12. Review, prepare, and submit operational and administrative reports.
  13. May be assigned specific duties such as cleaning of buildings and grounds.
  14. Supervise and control inmates in the central bus terminal.
  15. Perform all functions of the Lieutenant II position as required and other duties assigned by the Division of Security Management.
  16. Assist in emergency evacuations of inmates/civilians during or after inclement weather.
  17. May be placed on on-call list for weekend duties.
  18. This position serves as a driver for Richland County.

Must successfully complete an eight (8) week SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma and relevant experience; a bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for experience.

Additional requirements include:

  • At least 18 months of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
  • A degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for half of the required experience.
  • Certification by the SCDC training academy and successful completion of the basic supervisory course within six months of employment.

This position serves as a driver for Richland County.
