Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a supervisor to oversee security personnel on shift, ensuring safety and order within the facility.

You will assist with evaluations, disciplinary actions, counseling, briefings, inmate relations, counts, investigations, and counseling inmates. Must complete 8 weeks of SCDC Basic Training on hire. A high school diploma is required; a related bachelor's degree may substitute for experience. Certification within 6 months is required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; 18 months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• Bachelor's degree may substitute for part of the experience requirement.
• Certification by SCDC training academy and completion of basic supervisory course within 6 months of entry.

Responsibilities

• Maintains awareness of activities to inform subordinates of changes affecting inmates and operations.
• Performs routine and non-routine security checks of work areas and living units.
• Conducts formal and informal counts; responds to discrepancies.
• Investigates inmates' complaints and takes appropriate action.
• Instructs and counsels inmates as required.
• Monitors inmate movement within the institution.
• Performs essential duties of subordinates and other related tasks.

Job description

• Assists with preparation of employee evaluations, disciplinary actions and counseling sessions.
• Assists with conducting shift briefings with all officers.
• Remains familiar with all activities occurring during shift, to keep subordinates informed of changes affecting inmates and operations.
• Makes routine and non-routine security checks of work areas and living area units.
• Conducts counts (formal and non-formal).
• Investigates inmates' complaints and takes appropriate action.
• Instructs and counsels inmates as required.
• Monitors inmate movement within the institution.
• Performs essential and marginal duties of subordinates.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

• A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
