Job summary

The State of South Carolina is seeking a Security Supervisor to plan, coordinate, and direct security staff in a medium security facility. You will oversee inmate custody, protect all buildings and public property, and ensure OSHA safety compliance.

Routine unit checks, inmate counts, and conflict resolution are part of the role. Qualified candidates will have a high school diploma with relevant experience; a criminal justice degree may substitute for supervisory experience, and SCDC basic

• High school diploma and three years’ experience in correctional, security, military or police work with at least one year in a supervisory role.
• A degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for supervisory experience year for year.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.

Job description

• Under general supervision, plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in a medium security facility.


• Assumes primary responsibility for security of all buildings and public property.


• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.


• Assists with all inmates counts for accuracy.


• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

• A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

• A high school diploma and three (3) years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.


• A degree in criminal Justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).


• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
