POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Senior Welding Engineer will serve as the technical owner for welding processes supporting production operations within the facility. This role will be responsible for developing, implementing, optimizing, and sustaining welding processes used to manufacture structural steel products. The position will focus primarily on structural steel GMAW‑P pulse welding applications, while also supporting TIG welding processes used throughout the plant. The Senior Welding Engineer will work closely with Production, Quality, Maintenance, Design Engineering, Supply Chain, and Safety teams to ensure weld quality, improve productivity, support new product launches, reduce manufacturing costs, and maintain compliance with applicable welding codes, customer requirements, and internal standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serve as the facility subject matter expert for welding processes, welding equipment, weld quality, and welding standards.
  • Develop, qualify, and maintain welding procedures, work instructions, process standards, WPSs, PQRs, and supporting weld documentation as required.
  • Lead weld process development, optimization, and troubleshooting for structural steel fabrication operations.
  • Support robotic and manual GMAW‑P pulse welding processes and provide technical support for TIG welding applications.
  • Establish and maintain weld parameters, fixture requirements, consumable selection, shielding gases, preheat/interpass requirements, and process controls.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and corrective actions for weld defects including porosity, lack of fusion, undercut, distortion, spatter, cracking, burn‑through, and dimensional variation.
  • Support new product launches by reviewing designs for weldability, manufacturability, quality, and production efficiency.
  • Collaborate with Design Engineering and Quality to ensure welding requirements, welding symbols, inspection criteria, and acceptance standards are clearly defined.
  • Evaluate and implement improvements to welding equipment, fixtures, tooling, automation, robotic welding cells, and welding consumables.
  • Coordinate installation, startup, validation, and commissioning of welding equipment, tooling, and related process changes.
  • Apply Lean Manufacturing principles to improve safety, quality, throughput, labor efficiency, material usage, and overall welding line performance.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or related technical discipline required. Bachelor’s degree specifically focused in Welding Engineering or Welding Engineering Technology preferred.
  • 3+ years of welding engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Active Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification required.
  • Strong experience developing, qualifying, and maintaining welding procedures and supporting weld quality programs.
  • Experience with structural steel fabrication and welding processes.
  • Demonstrated experience with GMAW‑P pulse welding processes; experience supporting TIG welding processes preferred.
  • Working knowledge of robotic welding systems, welding automation, welding power supplies, and associated process controls.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, welding symbols, GD&T, and applicable welding specifications.
  • Experience with weld fixture design, process capability studies, weld quality validation, and weld inspection methods.
  • Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills related to welding defects and process variation.
  • Experience supporting APQP, PPAP, FMEA, Control Plans, and new product launch activities.
  • Knowledge of AWS welding codes, welding metallurgy, filler metal selection, shielding gases, and weld testing methods.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree specifically focused in Welding Engineering or Welding Engineering Technology preferred.
  • Experience in a high-volume structural steel manufacturing environment.
  • Experience programming, troubleshooting, and optimizing robotic welding cells.
  • Experience with large structural steel weldments and production welding fixtures.
