Job summary

The City of Portsmouth seeks an Equipment Operator to maintain and repair water mains, service lines, valves, and fire hydrants. You will operate heavy machinery, transport materials and personnel, and supervise less experienced staff as needed.

Responsibilities include installing and connecting water pipes, performing preventive maintenance, and ensuring safety on job sites. A CDL, background check, and medical/fitness evaluations are required for employment.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma or the equivalent, and 1 - 2 years of experience in the operation of motorized equipment, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A Commercial Learner's Permit at the time of hire and the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 90 days of hire.
• An acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and sex offender registry check.

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy motorized equipment to maintain water mains, service lines, valves, and hydrants.
• Supervises and trains other workers, assigns and evaluates work, and covers for the Equipment Operator IV when needed.
• Installs, repairs, and connects new water pipes to existing water systems; uses tools to repair leaks and replacements.
• Performs routine maintenance and safety checks on equipment and ensures compliance with safety regulations.
