Job summary

The City of Portsmouth is seeking a Plant Operator- Technical Services to support the operation and maintenance of wastewater pump stations and City facilities. The role emphasizes safety, reliability, and critical maintenance to ensure continuous, safe operations for the Portsmouth community.

Starting pay ranges from $25.66 to $36.24 per hour, with full-time hours (40/week) and a Monday–Friday schedule (7:30am–3:30pm).

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED plus 3 years of experience in maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility or one year of formal training in wastewater treatment preferred.
  • Advanced training in wastewater operations, pumps, motors or other skilled trade is highly desired.
  • Must acquire a commercial driver’s license, class B with tanker endorsement within 12 months of hire and have no offenses prohibiting insurability."
  • 18 months from hire to obtain Grade I NH Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification and 42 months for Grade II.
  • Certified operators must complete ongoing education/training to renew certifications.
  • Additional certification or licensing may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain City of Portsmouth facilities and wastewater pump stations, perform preventive maintenance and repairs to ensure reliable operations.
  • Support operation and maintenance of City facilities and infrastructure, water and wastewater treatment facilities, machinery and equipment.
  • Primary work location is the Public Works Facility in Portsmouth, NH, with potential work at other City facilities.

The City of Portsmouth is seeking a skilled, reliable, and safety-minded Plant Operator- Technical Services. This role is the backbone of our facilities and wastewater pump stations, ensuring reliable operations, performing critical maintenance, and directly contributing to the well-being of the Portsmouth community.

Starting pay rate: $25.66 - $36.24 an hour per the 1386A Salary Schedule and based on experience and licensing.
Hours:Full Time, 40 hours per week
Schedule: Monday-Friday: 7:30am-3:30pm

NATURE OF WORK

This position is responsible for assisting, both independently and as part of a team, in the operation and maintenance of City of Portsmouth facilities and wastewater pump stations. Duties include performing preventive maintenance, completing repairs, and carrying out assigned work tasks to ensure the reliable operation of facilities and equipment.

The role may also support the operation and maintenance of City facilities and infrastructure, water and wastewater treatment facilities, machinery, and equipment in accordance with established performance standards. The primary location of work duties is the Public Works Facility located in Portsmouth NH; however, daily activities may involve work at any City facility.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate holds a highschooldiplomaorearnedagraduateequivalent diploma (GED) along with three (3) years of experience in maintenance and repair of machinery and equipmentisrequired.Knowledgeofoperationandmaintenanceofawastewatertreatmentfacilityoroneyearofformaltraininginwastewatertreatmentpreferred.Advancedtraininginwastewater operations, pumps, motors or other skilled trade is highly desired.

Incumbent must acquireacommercial driver's license, class B(with tanker endorsement)within 12 months of hire and have no offenses which would prohibit or restrict insurability by any insurance carrier providing coverage to the City.

Incumbent will have 18 months from hire date to acquire a Grade I NH Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification and 42 months from hire date to acquire a Grade II Certificate.

Certified operators are then required to complete ongoing educationandtrainingtorenewtheircertifications.

Obtainingadditionalcertificationorlicensing may be required.
