Job summary

City of Durham is seeking Heavy Equipment Operators to maintain water and sewer assets. You will operate backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, and related equipment, ensuring safety and efficiency in busy field environments.

Requirements include a High School Diploma or equivalent, plus NC CDL Class A and relevant water/wastewater certifications. Overtime, weekends, and on-call duties apply; eligibility for cross-training across maintenance teams is expected.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• NC Grade C/B/A Water Distribution certification required or obtained.
• NC Grade I/II/III/IV Wastewater Collections certification required or obtained.
• Valid North Carolina Class A CDL with satisfactory driving record required.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, track-hoes, excavators, dump trucks and loaders.
• Coordinate maintenance operations and perform repairs on equipment, signs, and pumps.
• Inspect equipment and work sites, enforce safety policies, and document work orders.
• Support cross-training within Outfall Maintenance, Excavation, and Distribution/Collection teams.
