Job summary

Eastern Municipal Water District is seeking an advanced Distribution Operator to inspect, operate and maintain potable and reclaimed water systems. You will lead on assigned projects, direct staff, and perform regulatory compliance tasks under non-exempt status.

The role requires strong knowledge of water distribution, maintenance planning, and response to emergency situations. You will handle field work including inspections, equipment operation, and coordination with other departments.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of operating pumps, valves, electric motors, diesel and natural gas engines and control systems.
• Functions and servicing requirements of equipment used in a water distribution system.
• Safe working practices including hazardous materials handling.
• Methods and techniques of inspecting, maintaining and repairing a diverse range of equipment.
• Operational characteristics of water distribution systems.
• Principles and practices of chemical, bacteriological, and biological analyses.
• Basic mathematics.
• Principles and practices of record keeping.
• Federal and state safe drinking water laws and regulations.
• District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
• Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and District staff.
• The structure and content of the English language, including spelling and grammar.
• Modern equipment and communication tools for business functions and project coordination.

Responsibilities

• Operate a variety of pumping, treatment and transmission equipment to regulate flows and pressures.
• Read meters, gauges, and charts to identify problems and determine corrective actions.
• Perform preventive maintenance on pumps, valves, engines, motors and related equipment.
• Collect and analyze water samples to monitor quality and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Respond to leaks, emergencies and customer inquiries in a timely manner.
• Maintain records and reports advising on system operations and shutdowns.
