Job summary

County of Hawai‘i is seeking qualified candidates to operate and maintain wastewater treatment plants and related pumping facilities. You will monitor meters, sample wastewater, perform lab tests, and ensure regulatory compliance.

The role requires a Grade III Wastewater Operator Certificate, a valid Hawaii driver’s license, and willingness to work shifts, standby, weekends, and holidays. Successful applicants will participate in training, perform repairs, document operations, and support safety

Qualifications

• Possession of a valid Hawai‘i Mandatory Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade III Certificate at time of filing.
• Valid Hawai‘i driver’s license (Class 3) at time of filing and clean driving record for three years.
• Experience or training enough to competently perform journey level Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator III duties.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain wastewater treatment and tributary pumping plants to meet regulations.
• Read meters, gauges, and recording devices; interpret data to optimize operations.
• Inspect equipment, perform minor repairs, lubricate machinery, and assist with extensive overhauls.
• Collect samples and conduct lab analyses (pH, BOD, COD, chlorine residual, DO).
• Record test results, maintain logs, and prepare operational reports.
• Assist in installation, major repairs, and equipment upgrades.
• Attend safety trainings and ensure compliance with health and environmental rules.
• May rotate to other plants for training and certification advancement.
