Job summary

Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, IL is seeking a Senior Engineer – Warehouse Controls Engineer to maintain and improve PLC-controlled equipment and automation in a distribution center. You will diagnose PLC/HMI issues, support operations, and develop robust documentation and training materials.

The role emphasizes preventive maintenance, continuous improvement, and collaboration with vendors and engineering teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Electrical or Controls preferred) or equivalent work experience.
• 4–7+ years of PLC programming and troubleshooting experience (Allen-Bradley preferred).
• Experience in FDA-regulated manufacturing or consumer packaged goods.
• Experience with validation or commissioning documentation.
• Knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and industrial networks.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, troubleshoot, and improve automated control systems in a warehouse environment.
• Diagnose and resolve PLC, HMI, and control system issues impacting operations.
• Provide real-time support to minimize downtime and analyze faults for root causes.
• Document as-built PLC programs, network architectures, and configurations.
• Develop and share troubleshooting guides and training materials.
• Participate in system upgrades, installations, and FAT/SAT testing.
